Happy heavely birthday Prince

Most people know Larry Graham as the man who invented slap bass. The man who built the foundation of funk with his hands.

But there's a chapter of his story that changed music history in a way nobody expected.

Larry Graham is the reason Prince became a Jehovah's Witness.

The two men grew close in the early 2000s, and Larry didn't preach at Prince from a distance. He walked alongside him. He answered questions. He showed up. And at some point, Prince walked through the doors of a Kingdom Hall in Minneapolis and never looked at the world the same way again.

What followed wasn't a PR move or a phase. Prince stopped celebrating birthdays. He stopped celebrating holidays. He knocked on doors in his neighborhood and introduced himself as a Jehovah's Witness. He reconsidered parts of his own catalog. He found something that fame, genius, and a vault full of music couldn't give him.

Some fans struggled with it. Some respected it deeply. But all of it started with one man standing beside him at a threshold.

That's the kind of friendship that doesn't make the headlines. 💜
