STEP Student Advisory Committee members facilitated a workshop this past Saturday at Lehman College's LUTE-STEM convening on the importance of Student Voice when developing Servant Leadership opportunities for students.

The youth research conducted made a lasting impression on school leaders who attended the workshop. We are extremely proud of our STEP ambassadors as they continue to breakdown barriers!

How does your garden grow?

STEP students celebrated Earth Day in the Lehman garden where they weeded, composted and planted vegetables, likes kale and tomatoes.

Lehman STEP has been busy these past few months. We welcomed over 50 new students to the program, completed 5 weeks of Saturday Academy in Exercise Science and Science Lab for Middle Schoolers, planted vegetables for our garden, attended two STEM-focused field trips, created tutoring programs for math, Regents and SATs, hosted several SEL workshops, became CPR and First Aid certified, launched a book club and presented three research projects at STEPs Regional Expo....and we are only getting started.

STEP program highlights:
On Saturday, February 24th members of the Student Advisory Committee (SAC) led a scavenger hunt for Bronx community members! SAC planned, implemented and facilitated a workshop that shared the many historical artifacts on Lehman Campus, such as the Olmec Head located outside the music building. We are incredibly proud of STEPs SAC students: Derick, Jacob, David and Adelina for all their hard work!

STEP students explored how video game design can help bridge the STEAM inequities in communities like Harlem. Students spent the morning playing video games that encouraged group collaboration to problem solve multi-levels of mazes and puzzles all while having a blast!

High school students can explore the science behind exercise, fitness and healthy nutrition. And upon completion, student will receive a FREE CPR/First certification course with the American Heart Association.
And for 7th and 8th graders, they can become weekend scientist by applying for the super hands-on Science Lab class.

All students are eligible for the 3-part workshop series on College and Career Readiness.

As we look back on the year, we are extremely proud of how much we have grown...serving over 300 Bronx students!

From science poster presentations in Albany, canoeing trips, laboratory tours at Einstein School of Medicine to an AI collaboration with GOOGLE, we have accomplished so much this year!

Did you know December is Computer Science Month? And in celebration, STEP collaborated with GOOGLE to bring Lehman STEP students a workshop on "Artificial Intelligence (AI) in our everyday life".

Students learned about AI through game exploration as well as the importance of responsible and equitable technology. The human element will always be part of the equation.

We are half-way there! So, what have we been up to?

Science Lab students melted styrofoam cups in acetone to demonstrate the solubility of this kind of plastic in an organic solvent.

Coding Club middle school students have decided on video game creation as their final project and Garden Club harvested the last of the veggies before winterizing the garden beds.

We can't wait to see what the next few weeks have in store!
