Garifuna people who have migrated from Honduras, Central America to the U.S., historically, have been known to come to this country with limited technical job skills and little to no education. Without these basic necessities, one is limited to how far they can succeed, they can live comfortably, they can avoid poverty in this country. Studies have shown that parents with little to
no education typically raise children who perform poorly in school, who drop out of school, who abuse drugs or alcohol, or who commit some type of crime. Usually the children continue the cycle of living in poverty having limited skills and recourses themselves
Garifunas In Action is an organization to help, serve, and teach the next generation of garifunas:
- the importance of post secondary education and how to go through the process of completing High School, of seeking a college or trade school, and of learning how to pay for college, among other things.
- the importance personal finances (to save and budget money) to purchase long term investments such as a home, education, stocks and bonds, retirement, or a car.
- the importance of self-reliance and industry. How to market, advertise a product.
- the importance to serve and give back to the community by volunteering. One way to forget about oneself is to serve others who need your help more than you do.
- the importance of preserving the rich Garifuna culture, heritage, and language. Bob Marley said, "if you know your history, then you know where you come from." Just as using a map, you know where you are going, if you know where you coming from or stared. We will seek to teach basic Garifuna language.
