Juan Usera, Uptown Dance Collective guest artist, and Anthony Carrillo at National Dance Day - Fort Tryon Park.
Juan dances "El Esquife," accompanied by master percussionist Anthony Carrillo at the National Dance Day Festival at Fort Tryon Park, NY.

“El Esquife” by Juan Usera is a solo Bomba dance on a yuba rhythm, accompanied by a Bomba drum, at the upper corner of Dongan Lawn. This solo piece tells the story of the journey through the mangrove (forest) in search of freedom. This will be followed by audience interaction. For this performance, Juan will collaborate with virtuoso percussionist Anthony Carrillo on Bomba drums.
Bomba is the most representative art form of African-derived cultural expressions in Puerto Rican folklore and one of the oldest Black cultural practices linked to West Africa and other Caribbean nations. Bomba is performed at every major rite of passage, including funerary rites.

REIMAGINING: Fall Get-Together

Enslaved African & Kingsbridge Burial Ground
The Bronx, NY

Saturday, October 17 • 1 PM - 4 PM

Join us for an afternoon of creativity and reflection as we gather at the Enslaved African Burial Ground in Van Cortlandt Park.

The event will begin with a moving live performance by musician Juan Usera and The Sambuco Tribe, setting the tone and making space for remembrance and renewal. Following the music, Bronx-based artist Tijay Mohammed will lead an interactive chalk art project aptly named “Message to my Ancestors,” transforming the pathway into a vibrant canvas that honors history and sparks imagination for the future.

Local artists will work alongside Tijay Mohammed, including Adrienne George, Musah Swallah, Noel Hefele, and Yoshiko Mori.

This unique gathering blends art, music, and community in a powerful act of reimagining, bringing people together in a shared experience of creativity and remembrance.

Tijay Mohammed's "Message to my Ancestors" project is sponsored by Bronx Council on the Arts and AnkhLave Arts Alliance, Inc.

The event is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

This event is part of Van Cortlandt Park Alliance’s REIMAGINING initiative. VCPA invites the community to reimagine the park’s Enslaved African Burial Ground site as a memorial space that fosters long-term healing and restoration. Phase 1 of this project was supported by a generous grant from the Mellon Foundation.

Caribeando at the Farmstand

This workshop provides an excellent opportunity to learn and practice Caribbean musical and dance traditions rooted in African heritage.

Learn and practice Caribbean musical and dance traditions, including Bomba, Plena, Guaracha, Cha-cha-cha, Merengue, and more.

All ages, abilities, and skill levels are welcome to explore the basic rhythms, steps, call-and-response interactions, and shared community joy.

Caribeando is sponsored by The NYC Green Fund Grassroots Grant Program.
