Service Learning is a program through which Fordham University partners up with non-profit organizations in the local Bronx community, and gives Fordham students the opportunity to volunteer with them. Students will get the chance to learn through hands-on experience, while at the same time giving back to the local community. Fair Trade organizations have to meet certain requirements in order to label their products as ‘fair trade’ goods. One of those requirements is transparency. The World Fair Trade Organization ‘WFTO’ has outlined ten principles that all fair trade organizations must carry out during day-to-day operations to be classified as fair trade. One of the cooperatives that Spes Nova works with is the Nyabigena Soapstone Carvers Cooperative. The members of this cooperative live in the village of Nyamarambe in Western Kenya. Nyabigena means “land of soapstone,” and the cooperative has several soapstone quarries nearby. The carvers do not have complex equipment, so all of the work is done by hand with basic tools, such as chisels and small picks. [ 129 more words ]

Meet our featured artisan, Theresa Mauti!

She is one of the artisans from Nyabigena Soapstone Carvers in Kenya. The Nyabigena Soapstone Carvers Organization is a non-profit grassroots group which sells soapstone carvings, both locally and for export, to increase the standard of living of their community. The group of 150 members (120 men and 30 women) was registered as a soapstone marketing organization in Kenya in 1990.

The Nyabigena Soapstone Carvers Organization is a member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) The organization offers management training workshops, educational opportunities for widows and orphans, and health and nutrition education. They plan to start a tree nursery and to expand their educational and HIV/AIDS programs.
