Our second and last stop on the Bronx Community Ownership Bus Tour brought us to Soundview, where Youth Ministries for Peace and Justice (YMPJ) is transforming 37,500 square feet beneath the Bruckner Expressway into the Soundview Economic Hub. βœŠπŸ½πŸ—οΈ

What was once underutilized space is becoming a community-driven center for economic opportunity, entrepreneurship, workforce training, food access, arts, and neighborhood connection.

For decades, YMPJ has organized alongside Bronx residents for environmental, economic, and racial justice while helping transform neglected infrastructure into public spaces that serve the community. The Soundview Economic Hub continues that legacy, proving what's possible when development is shaped by local residents, artists, and vendors. 🌱

The Soundview Economic Hub along with all our stops on the Bronx Community Ownership Bus Tours reflect the vision of a stronger, more equitable Bronx, one where community ownership, local investment, and resident-led development create lasting opportunities for generations to come.

Despite the rain, community members joined the third Bronx Community Ownership Bus Tour led by Our Bronx and the Bronx Wide Coalition back in April. 🌧️🚌

Stop 1 with THE POINT CDC took us through Hunts Point to explore environmental justice and the impacts of environmental racism in the Bronx, along with community ownership models for a just transition. We highlighted local solutions like mesh WiFi, community solar, and transformed public green spaces. 🌱

We visited Barreto Point Park and Hunts Point Riverside Park, a former illegal dumping site now reimagined as a vibrant waterfront space with fishing piers, kayak launches, and open access for the community.

These efforts reflect years of community organizing and show what's possible when residents lead the fight for healthier, more equitable neighborhoods.

🚌 Next Stop: YMPJ’s Soundview Economic Hub!

For the past 6 years, the Bronx Community Land Trust (Bronx CLT) has been organizing to put land, housing, and community spaces into the hands of the people who call the Bronx home.

A Community Land Trust helps:

🏑 Preserve affordable housing
🌱 Protect community spaces
πŸͺ Support small businesses
🀝 Build collective power

A CLT is about protecting the places that make our neighborhoods thrive: homes, gardens, small businesses, and community spaces, while giving residents a real voice in how their communities can stabilize and grow for generations to come.

Rooted in collective governance, shared stewardship, and anti-displacement, the Bronx CLT is working toward a future where communities have greater ownership over the places they call home.

Check out some highlights from our recent Bronx Community Land Trust Annual Meeting, where organizers, tenants, and community leaders shared why community ownership matters, and what's possible when neighbors come together around a shared vision.

What happens when the Bronx comes together around a shared vision for the future?

Over two powerful days at the Bronx Economic Development Summit, we brought together changemakers from every corner of the borough and beyond to imagine, and begin building an economy that creates opportunity, stability, and wealth for Bronx residents.

From inspiring keynote speakers and thought-provoking panels to hands-on workshops and meaningful connections, the Summit highlighted both proven national models and the decades of work Bronx leaders have already invested in creating community-driven solutions.

This wasn't just a conversation about economic development. It was a commitment to action.

The work continues through new partnerships, working groups, and the implementation of the Bronx's first Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy.

For two inspiring days, community leaders, residents, workers, organizers, small business owners, educators, labor unions, faith leaders, investors, planners, and government partners came together at the historic Andrew Freedman Home for the Bronx’s first-ever Economic Development Summit.

Together, we explored what it takes to build an economy that works for the people who already call the Bronx home, one rooted in community wealth, shared ownership, economic democracy, and long-term opportunity.

From housing stability and stronger commercial corridors to worker ownership, local investment, and community-led development, the conversations were bold, honest, and action-oriented. Most importantly, they reinforced a powerful truth: the people of the Bronx create its wealth, and they deserve to share in it.

This Summit marks an important milestone, but the work continues through new partnerships, working groups, and the implementation of the Bronx's first Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy.

πŸ“… Join Our Bronx and ICA Group on June 17 from 10–11 AM for an information session on a new training program designed for Bronx organizations that support local businesses.
