Register to march with the UFT at the 2025 New York City Pride March! This year’s theme, “Rise Up: Pride and Protest” honors the legacy of the very first Pride March in 1970. Whether you’re a member of the community or an ally, we need your feet on the street at the march. Prior to the day of the march, we will tell registrants where and when the UFT contingent will meet up. Sign up here: https://www.uft.org/get-involved/events/nyc-pride-march-2025

Shirley Chisholm was a trailblazer who never lost sight of her roots in the Caribbean. Born in Brooklyn to immigrant parents from the Caribbean, Chisholm spent part of her childhood, from age 5 to 9, with her grandmother on Barbados. She went on to serve seven terms in the U.S. Congress — from 1969 to 1983 — as a representative from Brooklyn, where she was known for her advocacy on behalf of the poor, women and minorities. In 1972, she became the first woman and Black American to seek the nomination for U.S. president. Of her legacy, Chisholm said, “I want to be remembered as a woman … who dared to be a catalyst of change.”

New York City is again using ranked-choice voting for the June 24 Democratic Primary. Voters can select up to five candidates in order of preference, from first to last choice, on the ballot for Mayor, Comptroller, Public Advocate, Borough President and City Council. This means that any candidate who garners more than 50% of the first-choice votes is the winner. If no one reaches that threshold, the candidate with the least number of votes is eliminated and the votes are redistributed to the remaining candidates. If your first choice is eliminated, for example, your vote passes to your second choice, and so on. Whoever finally receives 50% of the vote wins. Is there a candidate you absolutely do not want to see in power? Do not rank them!

Early voting starts June 14! And remember: if you still want to vote for just one candidate, you can. Learn more at https://vote.nyc/page/ranked-choice-voting

UFT - United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew spent the morning in District 9. We started out with breakfast at PS 63. Then we walked through and greeted members at KAPPA, 219, FDA III and finally at the PK Site. A tremendously impactful experience for our district. A real vibe! So proud to have you here, Sir.
