The best communities don't happen by accident, they happen because people choose to show up.

That's the idea behind the new Monster Mentors Program at Eastern Arizona College. Through small mentor families made up of students, faculty & staff, and community or alumni mentors, we're working to help students find connection, confidence, and belonging.

As a mentor you won't be expected to have all the answers, you'll simply be part of a team helping students navigate college, build relationships, and feel supported along the way.

The commitment is just 3–4 hours per month during the school year, but the impact can last far longer.

If you're a local EAC alumnus or community member who would like to invest in the next generation of Monsters, we'd love to hear from you.

What percentage of current full-time employees at EAC (faculty and staff) are also proud EAC alumni?

Swipe through the photos (we had to add enough so that you can't see the answer right away here on Facebook) to see the options and the correct answer!

Over half of our current full-time team are Gila Monsters who came back home to EAC. That’s powerful proof of how special this place is!

Want to join them? Visit the EAC Employment Opportunities page and discover how you can come back home to Eastern Arizona College.

When we asked alumni “Who had the biggest effect on you during your time at EAC?”, one name that kept coming up was Joyce Flamm.

“Joyce Flamm challenged you to do better than you thought you could. She also taught me how to manage my time WAY better.”
— Carol Anne Weech ‘1994

“After struggling through college prep English, I asked around for the BEST… Joyce Flamm was the best, but also the toughest! She literally dissected how to write a paper every single day. That class has probably helped me more in my life than any other.”
— Pam McCain Woods ‘1989

Thank you, Ms. Flamm, for your high standards, your attention to detail, and for lessons that shaped both writing skills and character that last a lifetime.

From valedictorian who almost didn’t go to college, to a man whose name now graces the Industrial Technology Education Center at Eastern Arizona College.

In 1948, two teachers from Gila College showed up at Bill Bone’s family home and changed the trajectory of his life. Once at EAC, he worked tirelessly in the cafeteria, dorms, and even milking cows on a farm to graduate from EAC in 1952. He went on to earn two more degrees and teach for 40 years.

Bill never forgot the opportunity he was given. For decades he supported EAC students through scholarships and service, including time on the Alumni Association Board.

Today, the William J. Bone ITEC building stands as a lasting tribute to his gratitude, determination, and belief in the power of education.

We asked our alumni which professor or mentor at Eastern Arizona College made the biggest impact on them, and Tammy (Gillespie) Hemming was one of the names that stood out.

“Miss G (Tammy Hemming) knows her stuff and she knows how to teach it. I felt her love for us as students in the classroom and even years later… Miss G taught me so well how the body is structured and should function that I could reverse engineer issues.”
— Mary Anne Bryce ‘200

Thank you, Tammy, for making complex subjects exciting, for believing in your students, and for giving them knowledge that truly lasts a lifetime, sometimes even saving lives. Your passion and care continue to make a powerful difference.

Our alumni Q&A revealed some incredible mentors who changed lives, and Dr. David Lunt is at the top of many hearts.

“David Lunt will forever be my mentor, my life saver, and eternal friend. Getting to sing in his choir, choraleers, and quartets was life changing… I am whom I am largely because of this crazy, fun-loving, deep-laughing, heart-touching mentor, teacher, and friend.”
— Carrie Connolly Reay ‘1989

Thank you, Dr. Lunt, for the music, the laughter, the life lessons, and the countless hearts you’ve shaped through your passion and care. Your influence continues to echo far beyond the choir room.

Our alumni have spoken! In our recent Q&A, we asked who their most influential professor or mentor was at Eastern Arizona College, and today we’re celebrating Wayne Johnson.

From unforgettable field trips on Mt. Graham to the example he set during serious illness, Professor Johnson clearly left an impact far beyond biology lectures.

Today we celebrate a true legend, Coach Jerry Hekekia.

From his arrival at Eastern Arizona College in 1976, Coach Hekekia built powerhouse volleyball programs, earned national recognition, and, most importantly, shaped generations of students both on and off the court.

He was known as a tough coach who demanded excellence, but also as the one who welcomed players into his home for big teriyaki dinners and treated them like family.

Even in retirement, you’ll still find him in the stands, at practices, and staying active in the EAC community.

Swipe through to learn more about his incredible journey, championship legacy, and lasting impact on Gila Monsters everywhere.
