This Massachusetts Right Whale Day, we are celebrating the birth of 23 new calves for the 2025-26 calving season! 🥳

This is the highest total in a single season since 2009, providing a hopeful boost for the critically endangered species, which has an estimated population of only around 380 individuals!

Bocce and her newborn, seen here, were spotted by whale researchers in Cape Cod Bay on March 19. Other notable news: three new mothers were documented, including Callosity Back, Mirror, and an unnamed whale (4610).

Massachusetts Right Whale Day was designated by the state legislature in 2023 to raise awareness about the endangered North Atlantic Right Whale, the official state marine mammal. Ship strikes and entanglement remain the top risks to the population.
