Those who do usually follow routes to working in zoos or conservation. But a very small percentage of those chose to actually lay hands on the actual native species wildlife. It take courage and fortitude, passion and selflessness. The National Bobcat Rescue and Research Center (NBRR) is a branch of Crosstimbers Ranch Wildlife Center and focuses specifically on bobcats, as the number of urban bobc
ats has increased dramatically over the past ten years in large cities across America. Bobcats are among the most expensive animals to rehabilitate, therefore, very few private rehabilitators have the wherewithal to build appropriate facilities to care for them long term. NBRR was born of this dilemma. Private rehabbers were trying to raise them in homes, and the bobcats were becoming imprinted on humans. In other words, they were no longer afraid of humans, and any predator unafraid of humans is not suitable to be released. As these imprinted bobcats started being delivered to us, one after another, it became obvious that we were going to have to not only provide a place for wild bobcats to come receive the help and medical care they needed, but also a place for the cats that had been raised as pets or had become imprinted in the process of trying to raise them. The sanctuary was born and houses as many bobcats as our funding will allow. We certainly have room to grow, but only enough funding to maintain our current feed and supplies and both wild and permanent bobcats in care. (approximately 80 on average) Each year, NBRR helps 100-150 bobcats, but that number grows each year. We have had to find alternative homes for some of the "pet-raised" bobcats who cannot be released to the wild by way of choosing very specific organizations (zoos and museums) dedicated to the conservation of the species and education of the general public. No bobcat leaves here unless the organization it is going to can offer better care and facility to house them. We do NOT adopt bobcat to private citizens.
