This May, communities across Indiana are taking a stand against mental health stigma by lighting local landmarks green in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month. Organized in partnership with local NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Indiana affiliates, these displays serve as a visible reminder that support is available and no one has to face mental health challenges alone.
These efforts are led by local partners and NAMI West Central Indiana, NAMI Fort Wayne, NAMI Elkhart County, NAMI St. Joseph County, NAMI Greater Indianapolis, and NAMI Vigo County. In lighting their community green, these NAMI Indiana affiliate hope to raise awareness and ensure individuals and families know where to turn for help.
NAMI is using the month of May, around the nation, as a time to remind everyone that “Stigma grows in silence. Healing begins in community.” This phrase highlights what NAMI’s free resources provide: open conversations, shared experiences, and connection that fosters hope and understanding.
Throughout the month, the following locations will be illuminated green:
• Tippecanoe County Courthouse (Lafayette, Ind.) – May 1-4
• Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bridge (Forst Wayne, Ind.) – May 6-8
• Eli Lilly and Company campus (Indianapolis, Ind.) – mid-May
• Purdue University Fort Wayne Bridge (Fort Wayne, Ind.) – nightly throughout May
• South Bend River Lights (South Bend, Ind.) – May 4-5
• Vigo County Courthouse (Terre Haute, Ind.) – throughout May
With 15 local affiliates throughout the state, NAMI Indiana offers nearly 30 support groups for individuals with mental illness and their loved ones. Affiliates also lead public education classes that help individuals and families better understand and navigate mental health diagnoses.
Mental Health Awareness Month has been recognized in the United States in the month of May since 1949. Today, it remains a critical opportunity to connect people to care and reduce stigma. Each year, 1 in 5 U.S. adults and 1 in 6 U.S. youth experience mental illness, yet less than half receive treatment.
NAMI Indiana recognizes Mental Health Awareness Month to remind Hoosiers that they are not alone. Every person, no matter where they are on their mental health journey, deserves support, resources, and hope. For more information visit www.namiindiana.org.
