Together, We are Defenders of Potential
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Wabash Valley has been serving Clay, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion, and Vigo counties since 1964! We have proven success in creating and nurturing positive relationships that benefit everyone involved, including volunteers, children, families, and the community.
Who are the volunteer Bigs? Volunteers come from all social, financial and ethnic backgrounds. They may be college students, married couples, retirees or working professionals. Volunteers are carefully screened and trained to ensure the safety of every child.
As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 6 through 14, in communities across the country. We develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Wabash Valley also provides a school-based mentoring program for several local elementary schools and high schools. Currently, Big Brothers Big Sisters has 3 Clay county elementary schools and 1 high school participating in the program, as well as 4 elementary and 3 high schools in Vigo county. Brand new to school-based is Sullivan High School and Sullivan Junior High! Big Brothers Big Sisters will attend the schools and provide the elementary students with a healthy snack and tutoring.
The high school students who volunteer to participate in the after school program serve as Bigs for the elementary aged children. The Bigs will complete various educational activities, holiday arts and crafts with their Littles and play board games. This interaction twice a month will form life long friendships and better the lives of both the Big and Little.
Bigs with Badges is a nation wide program that pairs law enforcement and firefighters with children who need mentors. Volunteer mentors will visit the children in uniform at the child’s school once a week for lunch/recess!
