📣 Important Membership Renewal Update

Scouting America has announced that the current membership lapse period will be phased out and will end on **December 31, 2026**.

🔹 What Is Changing?

The lapse period has allowed members a short grace period after their renewal date before their membership becomes inactive. As Scouting America moves toward a simpler and more consistent renewal system, this lapse period will gradually be reduced and then eliminated.

📅 Key Dates

✅ Members with an **October 2026** renewal date will be the last to receive the full **two-month lapse period**.

✅ Members with a **November 2026** renewal date will receive a **one-month lapse period**.

✅ Members with a **December 2026** renewal date will receive **no lapse period**.

Beginning in September 2026, new and renewing units will use the standard charter fee plus pro rata fees through February 2028.

📅 Beginning January 1, 2027, members must be current in their registration to maintain active status.

Unit leaders, committee members, and families should begin planning ahead to ensure memberships are renewed on time and there is no interruption in participation, advancement, or registration status.

More information will be shared as Scouting America continues implementing its simplified membership and renewal processes.

YPT changes to Safeguarding Youth - TRAINING REQUIRED by 5-31-26 for all Leaders

Youth Protection Training (YPT) fully expires on Sunday, May 31, 2026, regardless of any previous expiration date. All registered adult leaders must complete the new Safeguarding Youth Training by that date, even if your previous YPT has not yet expired.

This training is required for all Scouting America registered volunteers and remains a key part of our commitment to providing a safe environment for every Scout. This new course replaces YPT, which is the former Youth Protection Training.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW:

· The Training includes a simple test at the end that must be completed with a minimum score of 80% on your first attempt. Otherwise, you will be directed back to the full course.

· Once you have taken the new course, you will then be eligible for the annual refresher, which is 20 minutes in length.

· The refresher only applies to those who have already taken this new version of the SYT training. The new SYT course has been offered since May of 2025, so some volunteers are now eligible to take the annual refreshers

o Please note if you do not take the refresher course on time, you will be put back into the full 90-minute course.

Any adult leader who has not completed the required training by May 31 will no longer be eligible to participate in Scouting activities, including meetings, campouts, events, and summer camp, until the requirement has been completed.

With camp season quickly approaching, we strongly encourage all leaders to complete this training as soon as possible.

Please help us by sharing this message with all leaders in your unit. You are welcome copy this email to send to your volunteers. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.

Complete your training today: https://my.scouting.org/

Thank you for your leadership and continued commitment to youth safety.

Yours in Scouting,
Chuck Fippen | Council Commissioner
Crossroads of America Council
Council Service Territory 9

Positions of Responsibility

Empowering youth to be leaders is one of the core principles in Scouting. Scouting is designed to help youth prepare to participate in, and give leadership to, their communities. Within the safety framework provided by the adult leaders, and with the Scoutmaster’s direction and mentoring, the Scouts plan and implement the Troop program. Scouts serve in positions of responsibility to make that happen.

Over the next couple weeks, we will be exploring these positions of responsibilty - what they are, what they mean, and how you can implement them in your Troop.

You can find more information about positions of responsibility on the Troop Leader Resources website: https://troopleader.scouting.org/general-troop-information/troop-structure/troop-positions/
