๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŽ“ Growing the Next Generation of Community Problem Solvers ๐ŸŽ“๐ŸŒณ

TREES Inc. is grateful for our long-standing and highly beneficial partnership with the talented students of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology!

This spring, four first-year civil engineering students dedicated their third trimester to developing a Systemwide Tree Planting and Canopy Recovery Plan for Deming and Rea Parks. Their work focused on identifying opportunities to expand tree canopy, enhance park landscapes, and create healthier, more resilient community spaces for future generations.

In mid-May, the students presented their recommendations to City Parks Superintendent Kilie Smith and TREES Inc. President Ann Ryan. We were impressed not only by the quality of their research and ideas but also by their passion for making a meaningful impact in Terre Haute.

We look forward to incorporating their recommendations into our upcoming city parks tree-planting grant project and hope to welcome these future engineers back this fall to share their findings with TREES members.

Partnerships like this remind us that when education, community, and environmental stewardship come together, great things can grow. ๐ŸŒฑ

Thank you to these outstanding students and to Rose-Hulman for helping cultivate a greener future for Terre Haute!

๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿ’š Congratulations to TREES Inc. member Lorrie Heber! ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒณ

We are thrilled to celebrate Lorrie Heber, who was honored with the prestigious Laudato Siโ€™ Award on Earth Day at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.

The award recognizes individuals whose work reflects the vision of Laudato Siโ€™, Pope Francisโ€™ call to care for our common home by addressing environmental challenges, climate change, and social justice. Lorrie, along with three fellow honorees, was recognized for her dedicated service as Executive Director of the White Violet Center for Eco-Justice.

TREES Inc. is proud to count Lorrie among our members and environmental champions. Her lifelong commitment to ecological stewardship, education, and community engagement has inspired countless people throughout the Wabash Valley and beyond.

As Sister Dawn Tomaszewski shared, the award honors those who live out "care for creation with extraordinary faithfulness" through a commitment to ecological stewardship, solidarity, and human development.

Please join us in congratulating Lorrie on this well-deserved recognition! ๐ŸŒŽ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ‘

It's Sapling Sunday!

TREES Inc. has spent more than 35 years planting trees across our communityโ€ฆ and now we want to see how theyโ€™re doing! ๐ŸŒณ
๐Ÿ“ธ Your sapling planted in the ground
๐Ÿ“ธ How youโ€™re protecting it from the mower or wildlife
๐Ÿ“ธ A selfie with your new tree

But donโ€™t stop thereโ€ฆ

Did you plant a TREES Inc. sapling 5, 10, 20, or even 30 years ago? Weโ€™d LOVE to see those too! Some of those tiny sticks may now be towering shade trees cleaning our air, cooling our neighborhoods, and making Terre Haute greener one leaf at a time.

Every picture tells the story of what community tree planting can become over time. ๐ŸŒฑโžก๏ธ๐ŸŒณ

Send your photos to us through Facebook Messenger or email them to [email protected]. Be sure to tell us when and where you planted it!

๐ŸŒณโœจ TREE OF THE WEEK โœจ๐ŸŒณ

Welcome to our new weekly series featuring the incredible native trees found along the Indiana Veterans' Memorial Mile, home to the โ€œ101 Trees of Indiana!โ€ ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐ŸŒฟ

Did you know the trail itself is shaped like the state of Indiana? As you walk the winding paths, you can discover a living collection of trees native to the Hoosier state, from towering hardwoods to beautiful understory species that support wildlife, pollinators, and healthy ecosystems.

So lace up your walking shoes, take a stroll around the Indiana Veterans' Memorial Mile, and see if you can spot this weekโ€™s featured tree! You just might find the perfect native tree to someday plant in your own yard. ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿก

Want to dive even deeper into Indianaโ€™s native trees? We highly recommend the book 101 Trees of Indiana by Marion T. Jackson, which inspired generations of Hoosiers to better understand the forests around them. ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿƒ

Native trees donโ€™t just look beautifulโ€ฆ they help clean our air, provide shade, reduce stormwater runoff, and create habitat for countless birds and butterflies. Every tree tells a story, and the Indiana Veterans' Memorial Mile is like walking through a living field guide to Indiana forests. ๐ŸŒฟโœจ

The Big Tree Committee measured three trees at Memorial Stadium on Tuesday, May 26,2026.

A cockspur thorn, a yellow birch, and a southern hackberry (sugarberry). Even though they are small, we will be submitting the yellow birch and southern hackberry for state champions as there are no current champions.
