This week we are excited to share former Butler Bulldog basketball player Matt Howard’s trick shot for charity!!

Matt Howard chose to support Project 44 in honor of his friend and Butler teammate Andrew Smith, who unfortunately passed away from leukemia. Project 44 is a non-for-profit organization founded by Andrew Smith and his wife Samantha Smith. The organization's goal is to save 44 lives through getting people to sign up for the bone marrow registry so people in need of a bone marrow transplant can find a match.

To learn more, Project 44’s website is https://project44.org/

A link to sign up for the bone marrow registry through Be The Match can be found here: https://my.bethematch.org/s/join?language=en_US&joinCode=andrew&refUrl=ENDREFURL

To make a donation to Project 44 follow the donate button below or a link through the Project 44 website can be found here: https://project44.org/donate/

Matt Howard grew up in Connersville, IN where he ranks as Connersville High School’s leading scorer and rebounder in school history. As a senior in 2006-07, he averaged 23.6 points per game and 14.4 rebounds per game, and actually the state of Indiana in rebounding.

Matt Howard went on to play college basketball at Butler University, where he lead Butler to its best basketball seasons in school history. Matt Howard is most remembered for his 2009-10 junior season and 2010-11 senior season at Butler, where he helped lead the Bulldogs to back-to-back NCAA national championship appearances under head coach Brad Stevens.

Butler’s basketball success during this time period would not have been possible without Matt’s exceptional play. He won the 2011 Lou Henson Award as the mid-major player of the year. He was the first basketball player ever to be a four-time Horizon League Men's Basketball Tournament All-Tournament selection. Matt was also exceptional in the classroom at Butler University, earning Academic All-American selections in 2009, 2010, and 2011. In 2011, he was named Men’s Basketball Academic All-America of the Year.

We'd like to thank BB Focus Visuals for the excellent drone footage capturing Matt's trick shot for charity.

Dr. Greg Bell, one of 3 Gold Medal Olympians from Terre Haute/Vigo County had an athletic career that was astounding! However, his resume of his life achievements is equally amazing!

This poor schoolboy, who grew up in a chicken coop attended Pimento School, and Garfield High School. His drive, talent, and perseverance took his life down many paths.

Greg Bell was not just a U. S Olympian
Gold Medal Winner, he was a stellar athlete at Indiana University, in Bloomington, Indiana, where it has been published “he is the greatest athlete to come out of I. U.”, he is a Veteran having served in the U.S. Armory, and he was a dentist beginning his 50 year career in Terre Haute.

Dr. Bell comes home often to honor, speak, and encourage young people in the track and field events.

He credits Dr. William Bannon, a well-respected M.D. from Terre Haute for his education at Indiana University!

Recently, October 29, 2022, Dr. Bell, at 92 years of age, graciously did a trick shot to raise support for his high school’s Purple Eagle Plaza. It was endearing to see Dr. Bell successfully master this trick shot in three tries in front of a host of people including Purple Eagles, IU alumna, youth from the community and a representative from the Olympic Committee.

Dr Greg Bell, along with our two other U.S. Gold Medal Olympians, Terry Dischinger and Clyde Lovellette, and the the many students, staff, and teachers that went through the pillared doors of Garfield High School from 1912-1971 will be honored by name on different sized pavers.

The Purple Eagle Plaza will also be adorned by a majestic, sculpted Purple Eagle sculpted by Terre Haute”s own Bill Wolfe, who also has sculpted Larry Bird, Max Erhman, Colonel Weir Cook, and many others.(indianaconnection.org).

As Chairperson of this project, Susan Hamblen Mardis along with our organization are challenging dentists, IU Alumni, and Veterans especially , as well as Garfield Purple Eagles to donate to the Purple Eagle Plaza in honor of Dr. Greg Bell. Mr. Mardis (Wiley High School-1970) and Mrs. Mardis (Garfield 1971) will match up to $5000.00 in Trick Shots for Charity.

If a donation of $1000.00 is made by a donor, a brick will be purchased and engraved with any name(s) on it they may choose.
Thank you in advance for your donation of any kind!

We are ready to build!

The Challenge has begun!
$5000.00 is the match!

This week we are excited to share 1956 Olympic Long Jump Gold Medalist Greg Bell’s trick shot for charity as well as wish him a happy birthday as he turns 92 today!! Greg Bell graduated from Terre Haute Garfield High School and went on to Indiana University to compete in track and field where he excelled in the long jump.

Greg Bell would like to raise funds for the Garfield Purple Eagle Plaza Community Project, which is a memorial plaza in plans to commemorate the school. You can donate using the donate button below. All donations to the Wabash Valley Community Foundation through this donate button will be dedicated to the Garfield Plaza. Alternatively, you can use this link: https://wvcf.org/funds/garfieldpurpleeagleplaza/

Greg Bell’s long jump accomplishments impress any sports fan. At Indiana University, Greg Bell won two NCAA titles, never lost a long jump competition, and twice came within inches of Jesse Owens’ world record. In the NCAA competition, he set the collegiate long jump record with a long jump of 26-7. In 1956, he won an Olympic gold medal at the Melbourne Olympic Games with a 25-8¼ long jump. He was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1988.

Greg Bell’s accomplishments should not overshadow the humble beginnings he came from. He grew up in chicken coop in Pimento, IN as the seventh of nine children during the Great Depression. The family originally had a true home, but a fire destroyed the home and caused the family to repurpose the chicken coop on the farm. After graduating Garfield High School, he worked odd jobs for money and ended up being drafted for the Korean War. In the service, he began to long jump again and won the 1953 European Championship for the U.S. Armed Forces. After his return from the war, his family dentist, William G. Bannon, encouraged Greg Bell to go to Indiana University to compete athletically, which he did. Greg Bell still considers Dr. Bannon’s mentorship and belief in him as a defining moment of his successful long jump career.

After athletics, Greg Bell went on to become a successful dentist and just recently retired from his practice. Interestingly, one of Greg Bell’s main hobbies is poetry. One line from a poem of his states, “And you know you owe the thanks for these dreams of yours come true — To the faith of all the people who said ‘I believe in you.’” Certainly, Greg Bell transcended all obstacles coming from his humble beginnings to eventually win an Olympic Gold Medal. However, Greg Bell credits William G. Bannon for his belief in him, and states if we saw support like this among all dealings with human beings, we’d have a much better world.
