Our rescue is a small operation. We have bio security in place that’s now second nature to us, but outside folks don’t know the protocols. As far as the RHDV2 vaccinations go - just the first group has been vaccinated- and they won’t be fully protected for another 2 weeks. There are still many rabbits here who are not yet protected. We have poultry, and avian flu is still a very real threat. There are horses, sheep, dogs , cats, and parrots here as well. All of these animals can bite, scratch, head butt, kick, or trip people; some injuries can be severe. We have steps and gravel, people can trip, fall, and get injured. I don’t think people realize all the vectors that the various diseases can be carried by, and that there are many more diseases that can easily be transmitted to the animals by germs carried on shoes, clothing, vehicles, and skin. We don’t wish to carry the level of insurance that would cover us for liability for all of the things that can happen, that’s a huge expense that can be better applied in the care of the animals. We don’t utilize volunteers for those reasons, as well as the fact it is our private residence. We are unwilling to assume the risk to outside people, but more importantly we are unwilling to risk our animals! We are always happy to arrange a meet & greet if someone is interested in a particular animal, but it’s not a shopping experience where someone is granted access to all of the animals to browse through. We know all of these animals - their personalities, their needs, and will happily suggest one that will fit your needs. Thus far we have done a phenomenal job of matching animals to their families. We will continue to do so while keeping our animals safe.
