🌎🌿 **World Environment Day 2026** 🌿🌎

Today, we celebrate the Indigenous communities who have protected our planet for generations.

Their stewardship of forests, rivers, biodiversity, and traditional knowledge reminds us that caring for the Earth is not about ownership—it’s about responsibility, respect, and connection.

At The Guatemalan Tomorrow Fund, we’re proud to support Indigenous communities across Guatemala through education, leadership development, sustainable agriculture, cultural preservation, and economic opportunity.

Through our partnership with Ak’ Tenamit, students from hundreds of remote communities are gaining the knowledge and skills needed to build brighter futures while protecting the natural resources that sustain generations to come.

🌱 Sustainable agriculture
🌱 Indigenous knowledge preservation
🌱 Environmental leadership
🌱 Women’s and youth empowerment

🌱🐟 Learning Beyond the Classroom at The Guatemalan Tomorrow Fund/ AK’ Tenamit

Education is about so much more than books. Our students are developing real-world skills through hands-on learning experiences that prepare them to become the next generation of leaders in their communities.

This week, our students participated in their first field activity at Finca La Puente in El Chal, where they learned how to classify tilapia by gender (male and female)—an important skill in sustainable aquaculture and agricultural management.

At The Guatemalan Tomorrow Fund and Ak’ Tenamit, students don’t just study vocational education —they live them. Through programs in agriculture, environmental management, hospitality, health sciences, community development, tourism, and more, our students graduate with over 3,000 hours of practical experience, giving them the skills, confidence, and leadership abilities needed to succeed and create positive change in their communities.

Every field exercise, internship, and hands-on project helps transform learning into action and prepares students to become leaders, entrepreneurs, and problem-solvers.
None of this would be possible without your support. Because of donors, sponsors, and friends like you, students have access to life-changing educational opportunities that break the cycle of poverty and create brighter futures.

💙 Sponsor a student for just $365 per year — only $1 a day — and help transform a life through education.

The sponsorship program helps cover tuition, room and board, transportation, and essential student support.

🌿✨ Indigenous Women Leading Change ✨🌿

Today we proudly celebrate Sara Bó 💙🇬🇹 — an incredible Indigenous woman leader helping create opportunities for rural Indigenous youth across Guatemala.

This week, Sara represented Asociación Ak’ Tenamit / The Guatemalan Tomorrow Fund at the Tercera Reunión Ordinaria – Mesa Intersectorial Mercado Laboral (GABECO), where leaders gathered to advance dignified employment opportunities in Guatemala.

Through her leadership, our students are gaining access to internships, professional development, and meaningful employment after graduation — opening doors for the next generation of Indigenous leaders. 🌱

For more than 30 years, Ak’ Tenamit has worked alongside Indigenous communities through:

🌱 Education
🌱 Leadership Development
🌱 Gender Equity
🌱 Healthcare
🌱 Sustainable Employment Opportunities

Women like Sara are shaping the future of Guatemala. We are deeply proud of her leadership and commitment to our students and communities. 💫

“Don’t Cut My Wings.” 🕊️🎨

One of the most powerful moments at our vocational campuses this weekend was watching our female students paint murals that reflected their dreams, courage, and determination to rise above the challenges they face every day.

Their message was clear:

education gives girls the freedom to fly.

In Guatemala, indigenous girls continue to face enormous barriers to education. Nearly 488,000 girls are out of school, and the challenges grow even greater in rural communities where poverty, early marriage, adolescent pregnancy, and lack of transportation prevent many girls from continuing their studies. Only about 37% of girls complete upper secondary school, and indigenous girls are among the most underserved populations in the country.

At The Guatemalan Tomorrow Fund, we believe every girl deserves the chance to learn, grow, and lead. Today, we proudly house and educate over 1,200 students at our boarding school campuses, providing not only education, but safety, mentorship, nourishment, and hope for a brighter future. Many of our students travel from remote villages where access to school is nearly impossible without support.

These murals are more than art — they are declarations of resilience. Every brushstroke represents a girl refusing to let poverty, discrimination, or circumstance define her future.
Because of our incredible partners and donors, these young women are gaining the skills, confidence, and education needed to become leaders in their communities and break cycles of poverty for generations to come. We simply could not do this work without you.

Thank you for helping our girls spread their wings. 💛

✨ These Past 10 Days at The Guatemalan Tomorrow Fund/ AK’Tenamit✨

Over the past 10 days, The Guatemalan Tomorrow Fund/AK’ Tenamit has been honored to collaborate with Rotary International and research professionals from Columbia University on a powerful initiative focused on youth mental health and su***de prevention in Indigenous communities across Guatemala. 💙🇬🇹

Together, we are supporting a Rotary Global Grant pilot study dedicated to:

🧠 Su***de risk screening
💬 Mental health awareness
🌱 Early intervention and emotional support for Indigenous youth and students

Mental health challenges among youth in Guatemala continue to be a growing crisis, particularly within Indigenous and rural communities where access to mental health services is extremely limited.

Many students face trauma, poverty, anxiety, depression, and social isolation without access to professional support or resources.

Through this important collaboration, we are helping raise awareness, support research, and create culturally sensitive approaches to mental health care that can better serve Indigenous youth and their communities. ✨

At The Guatemalan Tomorrow Fund, we believe that mental health is just as important as physical health. Every young person deserves access to care, support, and the opportunity to thrive regardless of their background or circumstances.

This initiative reflects our ongoing mission to empower Indigenous communities in Guatemala through education, healthcare, research, and sustainable community development. 🌍

Together, we are working toward a future where Indigenous youth feel seen, heard, supported, and hopeful. 💙

🌎✨ Indigenous women are leading the way in the fight for climate justice.

The Guatemalan Tomorrow Fund proudly celebrates the leadership of Lola Cabnal, Public Policy Advocacy and Management Coordinator at AK’ Tenamit, who is contributing her voice, experience, and wisdom to this growing global movement for climate action and Indigenous rights.

Over the past two days, Lola helped lead an intergenerational dialogue on Climate Change and its impacts on rural communities — especially on the lives of Indigenous women. Women leaders, midwives, elders, and young students came together to exchange knowledge, experiences, and solutions rooted in ancestral wisdom and collective action.

The gathering explored how climate change is affecting food sovereignty, health, biodiversity, water systems, ecosystems, and Indigenous knowledge systems.

Participants also learned about the three major global environmental conventions:

🌱 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
🌿 Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
🌾 United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)

One of the most powerful messages shared was the importance of protecting Indigenous ways of life, strengthening traditional practices, and reconnecting youth with the wisdom of elders — learning to understand the language of nature, early warning signs, and the sacred balance of Mother Earth.

Lola also shared her experience as an Indigenous woman from a rural community participating in international climate negotiations, inspiring young women to become informed, engaged, and active leaders for the future.

At AK’ Tenamit, women and youth are not only part of the conversation — they are shaping the future. 💚

🌱 Get to Know Our INDRI Campus 🌱

At The Guatemalan Tomorrow Fund, our impact extends far beyond the classroom.

Through the Indigenous Institute for Integrated Rural Development (INDRI) in La Libertad, Petén, we are creating opportunities for young people to learn, grow, and build brighter futures.

INDRI serves approximately 300 students from Petén and Alta Verapaz—regions where systemic barriers often prevent access to secondary education.

Together with our Río Dulce campus, we served more than 1,000 students in 2025 alone (502 young men and 529 young women) from 360 communities across 37 municipalities in Guatemala, including Alta Verapaz, Petén, Quiché, Huehuetenango, and beyond.

Our mission is clear: to equip students with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to secure dignified, environmentally responsible employment—or create opportunities of their own.

✨ Through our Student Sponsorship Program, initiatives like the “$1 a Day Program” helped support more than 200 students this year, covering essential educational costs and opening doors to life-changing opportunities.

One dollar a day may seem small, but its impact is life-changing. It represents hope, access, and the first step toward breaking the cycle of poverty.

They travel up to 13 hours to access education.

Estefany and Yoselyn are twin sisters from San Francisco, La Tinta, Alta Verapaz—one of the most underserved regions in Guatemala, where poverty, malnutrition, and limited access to education continue to impact the lives of many young girls.

But they chose a different path.
Driven by determination and hope, they travel up to 13 hours to reach the Ak’ Tenamit campus in Petén, where they study in a boarding program. For three months at a time, they live far from home, pursuing an education that is transforming their future.

They speak Q’eqchi’, one of the most widely spoken Mayan languages, and come from a family that strongly believes in education as a pathway to opportunity.

“We always support each other. If one gets sick, the other takes care… we are never alone,” Yoselyn shares.
Today, Estefany dreams of becoming an agronomist, while Yoselyn aspires to be a chef. Their vision goes beyond personal success—they hope to return to their community to create opportunities, empower women, and contribute to sustainable development while honoring their cultural identity.

Their story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when determination meets opportunity.
