Thad Berrett, Powder River District Ranger, invites your comments on the proposed action for the Tensleep Climbing Management Plan project. The project proposes actions to manage climbing and recreation in Tensleep Canyon while protecting natural resources and providing diverse recreation opportunities. Public scoping, happening over the next 30 days is a critical component of the planning process.

The proposal documents, including the Preliminary Purpose and Need and Proposed Action and Maps are available online at the Bighorn National Forest's website: https://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=64474.

The Forest Service will host two public meetings to provide an opportunity to learn about the proposal and how to comment. The Forest Service will host a virtual public meeting on November 13, 2023 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. MDT. The link to register for the virtual public meeting is HERE.

The Forest Service will also host an in-person public meeting November 15, 2023 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. MDT. The in-person public meeting will be at the Ten Sleep High School cafeteria, 242 Cedar Street, Ten Sleep, WY 82442. Enter through the west doors at the back of the building. Take a minute to read this article by Nita Tallent. This piece gives a detailed overview of Ten Sleep climbing as well as a more detailed look into the USFS, and their current efforts to develop a management plan.
We are YEARS past the iconic “Anarchy in Tensleep” cover in Climbing Magazine and still we have no real resolution to the issues that instigated the mass route removals in beloved Tensleep Canyon.
Reports of new routes developed during the ban, redevelopment of heavily manufactured routes, and new trails run amok are brought to our attention regularly.
Please give this a read and tell us what you think. Should this process have been faster, or is this cooling off period needed? Should newly developed routes put up during the bolting ban be stripped? These are nuanced issues, and deserve a venue with some real conversation.

It has come to the Society's attention that the Octagon has been published in the new Ten Sleep book. This area was developed by local power house Kevin Wilkinson for step power training for local climbers. Although it wasn't a "secret area", Kevin chose not to publish this area due to the private land access, safety concerns regarding the poor rock quality, and the ethics used to make a chossy cave climbable.

From one climber to another, please be respectful of the private land access. Car pool to the parking lot to avoid filling it. If there are already multiple cars please try a different day. And use extreme caution when climbing these routes. A helmet is recommended when belaying. If it doesn't have chalk or boot rubber on it don't touch it!

UFO sightings and redneck abductions have been reported in this area.

The future of sport climbing is in the hands of local advocates and we want to help you support Wyoming stewardship. The Aerospace guidebook unapologetically names routes that were unethically developed, and were only able to do this work because we get feedback from the community.
Speak up and say something if you see something that isn’t right, and the Aerospace Society will have your back.

The Ten Sleep Canyon Aerospace climbing and preservation squad is shipping books left and right. Weather is getting ripe for spring sending. Get your non-profit-no-chiselers-welcome-guidebook, now with great new routes, including a sad story of some other new routes.

Welcome To Tensleep Canyon Climbing. We take seriously the health and safety of those around the canyon. Be safe and have fun, but remember that even the best of circumstances can lead to danger.

We are still going to carry this torch of climbing ethics. Someone reached out to us and asked us to get off our soap box, which we wont. The new book calls out all manufactured routes, new and old, no favorites being played. We will continue to be the best stewards of the land that we can be.
New route development standards are being developed, which include what to do with routes that were established during the bolting moratorium. We fully support the efforts of the USFS to maintain the canyon for generations and generations to come.

The 11th edition of the Tensleep Canyon guidebook is now available on the web. This is a NON-PROFIT guidebook with all proceeds being funneled back into the hardware and trails that make climbing possible in Tensleep.
We spent a few years putting this together to make sure that every error was perfectly places and no misidentification of routes went unappreciated. Please enjoy.
