Bighorn Climbers' Coalition

Bighorn Climbers' Coalition We will work hard to ensure that climbers continue to be a responsible, conscientious, and relatively low-impact user group.

The Bighorn Climbers’ Coalition is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, protecting and promoting access to climbing resources in the Bighorn Mountains and Bighorn Basin of Wyoming. FOUNDING PRINCIPLES

1.BCC’s founding members and board of directors are a passionate and dedicated group of longtime area climbers and Wyoming residents who currently live in the Bighorn Basin.

2.The BCC

is heavily invested in forging and maintaining positive connections between the greater climbing community and relevant land managers and local communities.

3.The BCC intends to raise funds, obtain grants and organize efforts to improve local recreation areas. This will benefit the climbing community as well as other recreational user groups while decreasing potential negative environmental impacts from climbers.

4.One of our biggest goals is to get a permanent outhouse facility established in Ten Sleep Canyon in a location that makes it easily accessible for climbers. This would be a service to others enjoying recreational pursuits in the canyon as well.

5.Other BCC goals include working with land managers to find funding and manpower for posting information and signage at relevant pullouts in both Ten Sleep Canyon and on Cedar Mountain in Cody, as well as organizing and participating or recruiting participants for trash pickups, better campground management, educational outreach efforts, and trail improvement/building days.

6.The BCC aims to establish Memorandums of Understanding with all relevant land managers outlining and detailing the relationship between and duties of the climbing community and the land manager.

7.The BCC intends to be actively visible and accessible in the local communities that stand to make direct economic gains from the presence of both visiting and local climbers. We hope to establish more active relationships and dialogs between the greater climbing community and the town of Ten Sleep and cities of Cody and Worland.

8.Anyone can make donations and/or become a member. An individual membership costs $25 per year.

9.The BCC is an Access Fund affiliate, meaning that we’re partnered with the nation’s largest climbers’ advocacy group.

10.The BCC supports the continued development of and access to our climbing resources on public lands.

Community Alert! The Powder River Ranger District proposes to develop a Climbing Management Plan for Tensleep Canyon. The plan will outline where future route development may or may not occur and identify new system trails and parking areas. Now is your chance to provide comments and help shape the DRAFT climbing management plan for Tensleep.

Bighorn Climbers' Coalition and Access Fund are asking land managers to:
✅Ensure Tensleep Canyon remains accessible to climbers and allows sustainable development activities that protect the area’s natural and cultural resources.
✅Clearly define fixed anchor management objectives that will support climbing activities in Tensleep Canyon.
✅Establish management guidelines and climber education best practices for land managers.
✅Support proposed trail stewardship, parking, and toilet infrastructure.

Attention Tensleep climbers! The Powder River Ranger District has proposed a climbing management plan for Tensleep Canyon outlining the possibility for route and trail development in the Canyon.”The project area is located from Meadowlark Lake and southwest on either side of the U.S.Highway 16 corridor to the Forest boundary at the bottom of the canyon”.

If anyone would like to voice input on the subject please visit the projects documents page at https://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=64474 and drop a comment in the link located in the get connected tab. This project will be revised if we have valuable input.

Your thoughts and comments are much appreciated!

The Bighorn Anchor Initiative has been hard at work in the canyon, replacing bad bolts and updating anchors. We have updated 104 routes this season alone, including every route at Crag 6, Grasshopper Wall & many more! Your donations & membership to the BCC & other organizations like the ASCA make this work possible.

Local Ethic Reminders:
● Only the last person from your group should lower from the Climbtech Lowering hooks "Mussys".

● Top Rope on your own gear and use the lowering hooks for cleaning only.

● If your party is not present and ready to climb a specific route, please allow others to hop on in between.

These are considered the best practices around the world and help ensure that fixed anchor hardware lasts for a long time.

Please report any bad bolts / anchors / dangerous looking hardware via the link below.

Big shout out to the ASCA ( )for the extensive shipments of route replacement gear and equipment🙌.
