A rare sighting of a Harris' Hawk on New Castle Island! Mahood seemed to feel right at home among the gulls and cormorants of New Hampshire's coast, not to mention the local elementary school kids and parents who came out in force to welcome him. Many thanks to the New Castle Library for arranging a wonderful event on October 24, and to David J. Murray for this lovely photo.

July means lots of fledging hawks! Young broad-wings (like this one) have just left the nest. Be mindful that young birds found on the ground are probably not injured, just inexperienced. Adults will still tend to their chicks, if given a chance. If you have questions about a bird apparently in distress, contact a licensed avian rehabilitator.
