I wish referees would respect themselves more than to give such steep volume discounts on our labor. All else being equal ⏤ rules, format, level, distance ⏤ I still find myself confounded how refs would rather work all day for 20% to 50% off their game/hourly rate if it means squeezing in a few extra games.
What are you saying about yourself?
That you belong at a Costco except we don't need a membership to buy you in bulk? That you're a Dairy Queen ice cream cone? The 10th one is free! 😆
Or basically, that the more time we take from your life, the less value it has, and your extra sweat, hustle, and pain are worth absolutely nothing.
What is really crazy when you think about it, is that in regular per-hour jobs, if you work more than eight hours, you're entitled to overtime. Weekend officiating meanwhile, has the expectation that the more you work, your hourly rate should decrease!
And what are you getting for that few extra dollars in aggregate earnings aside from sore legs, a bad back, and knees that will need braces to the point you walk like Robocop in your later years. I know we're all chasing the bigger paycheck, but you have to consider what you're giving up for it! You have to value the actual labor that you're putting up for that money.
A while back, tournament directors and assignors discovered that if they offer officials a full day's worth of games, they can get refs at a MASSIVE discount.
"Oh I'll let you work all day! You can have as many games as you want!"
That's how they get you. If they find a referee they know is desperate for money, that extra $50 might indeed make a difference. Opportunistic asshats that they are, those assignors offer those officials as many games as possible because it saves them time and money over having to find multiple referees to cover the same set.
This weekend, I wish all of our American referees an amazing Labor Day! I hope you get some rest and reflect again on the VALUE of your work. We encourage you to fight and obtain the VALUE that you deserve for it. Don't let the tournament directors or assignors try to dictate it for you. They want the bulk discount. They want your labor for cheap! Don't give it to them.
And as always, if we're united, the fight becomes easier.
