Five months in, this isn’t a blip anymore.

The May Manufacturing PMI® registered 54 percent, its highest reading in four years, as demand indicators continued to strengthen and factory activity remained firmly in expansion mode.

But the story is more nuanced than a headline number:
• The New Orders, Backlog of Orders and New Export Orders indexes all expanded, pointing to sustained demand rather than tariff-driven buying.
• Employment remains in contraction, but hiring sentiment is showing signs of improvement.
• Prices remain elevated and supply continuity concerns tied to the Iran conflict continue to cast a shadow over the outlook.
