People seek out embryo donation for many reasons. Some are dealing with infertility issues, or find it more financially feasible than other assisted reproductive technologies. But for those motivated by the belief that life begins at conception, embryo donation is not just a tool for family planning—it’s a rescue mission to save the lives of children frozen in time.
Some believe that fetuses and embryos should be granted the same legal rights and status as born people. That’s at the heart of the fetal personhood movement, which many believe has dangerous implications for women’s rights.
Within the world of embryo donation, there is a strong presence of faith-based organizations. National Embryo Donation Center (NEDC), a Christian organization, is one of the biggest full-service embryo donation organizations in the country. The website describes embryo “adoption” as “a wonderful way to honor God’s tiniest image-bearers.”
Andrea Darby, a woman who discovered NEDC after suffering from infertility issues, says she felt like she’d found her calling when she discovered embryo donation. “I love every single embryo [we had],” says Andrea, who received 10 embryos from the organization. “This was a mission that I felt like God had put in my heart.”
As the country prepares for a change in president in 2025, the state of IVF, reproductive health, and fetal personhood hangs in the balance.
