NHDAZ: Making history come alive for Arizona's students!

National History Day makes history come alive for America's youth by engaging them in the discovery of the historic, cultural and social experiences of the past. Through hands-on experiences and presentations, today's youth are better able to inform the present and shape the future. NHD inspires children through exciting competitions and transforms teaching through project-based curriculum and instruction.

Happy World Teachers’ Day! 🍎

Behind every NHD student asking better questions, digging deeper into a source, or proudly presenting months of research is often a teacher who encouraged them along the way.

Thank you to the educators who make room for curiosity, challenge students to think critically, and somehow keep everyone moving forward when project season gets a little chaotic. 📚

We’re grateful for everything you do for Arizona’s student historians, both in and beyond the classroom.

Important update for all NHDAZ students, teachers, and families 📣

Effective October 1st, National History Day has updated its policy on generative AI.
The use of generative AI in NHD projects is now strictly prohibited.

If a student used generative AI before this policy change, NHD has provided a procedure for addressing that work.
Parents or teachers of students with disabilities may also contact National History Day regarding accommodations to ensure students can fully participate.

We encourage everyone participating in NHDAZ this year to review the updated policy and share it with students, teachers, and others involved in the NHD process.

National History Day has provided the full policy, its rationale, detailed guidance, and a student-friendly infographic on the NHD website.

Please take a few minutes to review the new guidance as you continue working on your 2027 NHD project.

Feeling behind doesn’t mean you have to figure everything out at once. Start with one question, one search, or one source and build from there 📚

And remember, you don’t have to research alone! The Arizona Historical Society’s Library & Archives staff can help student historians navigate collections, identify potential primary sources, and figure out where to look next.

Looking for research assistance?

- Reach out to an AHS archivist
- Visit an AHS Library & Archives research location in Tempe or Tucson
- Come prepared with your topic and a few specific research questions
- Ask about collections or primary sources related to your research

A little help finding the right direction can make that next step feel much more manageable 🫶🏼

Arizona teachers are getting ready for NHD! 📚

Yesterday, we welcomed more than 20 educators in Chandler for an NHDAZ Teacher Professional Development workshop.
These teachers explored the NHD process, practice judged a previous Nationals-qualifying documentary, learned strategies for bringing historical research into their classrooms, and got ready to guide the next generation of student historians.

NHDAZ students Dorothy Zhou and Thanvi Voruganti have won the $1,500 Lowell Milken Discovery Unsung Heroes Founder’s Award! 🎉🌎

Representing Arizona College Preparatory High School and Hamilton High School, their documentary—The Woman Who Would Not Be Silenced: Judith Heumann, the Unsung Hero of the Disability Rights Revolution—explores Heumann’s fight for equality, accessibility, and civil rights for people with disabilities.

Their work has already earned 7th place at the NHD National Contest and a spot in an NHD Museum Showcase. Now, their research has been recognized from among thousands of students worldwide. 🤯

Congratulations to Dorothy, Thanvi, and their teacher, Stacey Trepanier! We are so proud to see this incredible project continue to make an impact. 💛

Changing your mind isn’t a sign that your research went wrong. Sometimes, it means you’re doing it right. 🔎

As you discover new sources, encounter different perspectives, and/or uncover evidence you didn’t expect—your understanding of your topic should evolve.

Good historians don’t force the evidence to fit their original ideas. They stay curious and let what they discover shape where the story goes.

That’s part of becoming a historian. 🌱
