October 9, 1995. In the dead of night, 50 miles from Phoenix, the Amtrak Sunset Limited was violently forced off the tracks. Rails were deliberately unbolted, sending 8 cars plunging into a dry ravine in a cold-blooded act of sabotage. 78 injured, 1 dead, and a mystery that remains unsolved to this day. A shadowy group called "Sons of the Gestapo" left their mark, but the culprits vanished into the Arizona dust, leaving behind a 30-year-old cold case and a city forever cut off from the tracks.

back in 1908 these Douglas fir spars were shipped from from Washington State to Bath, Maine where they were used as masting for sailing vessels. It took three 36 - 40 foot flat bed cars to carry the ones in this image. It's enough to give serious wood butchers a wet dream .I have no idea if this was a one off shipment or something done regularly.
