The Escalante Community Garden (ECG) produces organic foods using sustainable methods and is located within the Escalante neighborhood of Tempe, Arizona. Its harvests are distributed among its volunteers and Tempe Community Action Agency's food pantry. The garden is steered by an active volunteer core who aims to empower our communities.

Growing Food 201 – Once You’re Ready For More Than The Basics**

Workshop #1 - How to start a community garden to grow your own food *

Date: Saturday September 23 from 8 – 10 am. Location: St.Vincent de Paul Urban Farm 1075 W Jackson, Phoenix. Topics include permits, land, resources, equipment, use agreements, how to locate volunteers, funding, partnerships, etc. Recommended if you want to start a sustainable community garden.

Instructors: Allison Parisi, Maricopa County Department of Health Services & Dave Talley, Sky Garden

Workshop #2 –Water, Water, Water!! **

Date: Saturday October 14 from 8 – 10 am. Location: St.Vincent de Paul Urban Farm 420 W Watkins Street, Phoenix. Everyone knows we live in a desert but how much do you know about the different ways to water the plants in your garden so they produce the best food? Topics include drip and flood irrigation, moisture sensors, etc. Instructor: Bill Casenhiser, Certified Agricultural Irrigation Specialist (CAIS)

Workshop #3 – Skills for building your garden to raise food *

Date: Saturday October 28 from 9 -11 am. Location: St.Vincent de Paul Urban Farm 420 W Watkins Street, Phoenix. Topics include raised beds, water, soil compost, plants, (fall planting) resources, etc.

Instructor: Pam Perry, Master Gardener and instructor at Desert Botanical Garden

Workshop #4 – Growing Fruit Trees in the Desert **

Date: Saturday November 18 from 9 -11 am. Location: St.Vincent de Paul Urban Farm 420 W Watkins Street, Phoenix. Whether you are a beginner or much more advanced grower you will learn a lot about how to grow fruit trees!!! Topics include: building healthy tree growing soil, selecting the right tree for you, harvesting, plant rotation, dry down, frost, etc.Instructor: To be determined.

Workshop #5 – Seed Saving – Why It’s Important & How to Do It **

Date: Saturday December 2 from 9 -11 am. Location: St.Vincent de Paul Urban Farm 420 W Watkins Street, Phoenix. This workshop will give you an opportunity to learn about seed saving and storage, why it’s important, and what resources exist in Maricopa County for you to get seeds for growing food that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to access.

to last year when a bunch of neighbors in the Escalante neighborhood came out to paint a community mural at the The Escalante Community Garden. We had a great turnout from students and families from Thew Elementary School. Have you seen the finished mural?
