𝗔𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗼𝗻𝗮 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗼𝗻𝗮 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗻𝘀 𝗩𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗦𝗠𝗔𝗖 𝟭

This week, at the League of Arizona Cities and Towns (the League) annual conference the league chose to pass PSMAC 1, a resolution aimed at blocking future improvements to the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System (PSPRS). Resolution PSMAC 1, after over a decade of collaborative efforts to improve PSPRS, is the league’s preemptive declaration that they have no intention of addressing in good faith reasonable and much needed changes to PSPRS system on behalf of Arizona police officers and firefighters. They have sent a clear message they do not value public safety officers or the communities we serve.

This decision will continue to have adverse impacts on the communities we serve and only exacerbate the challenges of recruiting and retention, of police officers and firefighters. Public safety in our communities will suffer.

We want to acknowledge and thank the mayors who stood up against PSMAC 1, including Mesa’s Mark Freeman, Peoria’s Jason Beck, Glendale’s Jerry Weiers, and Goodyear’s Joe Pizzillo. These leaders recognize the reality our officers face on the streets and the importance of protecting both public safety resources and the retirement system that helps keep first responders on the job. Unfortunately, others, led by Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke, turned their backs on those realities and on the men and women who risk their lives daily. We will call out politicians that fail to support public safety and publicly thank those who do.

The Arizona Police Association will always fight for Arizona Police Officers (including our newest officers), their families, and our communities. You deserve to be supported, respected and appreciated for the risk you take every day.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Apache Junction Police Department Officer Gabriel Facio’s passing. Officer Facio was critically injured in a shooting last Monday. Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and the entire AJPD family.

His service, sacrifice, and bravery will never be forgotten. 💙

It is with a broken heart I inform you of the passing of Officer Gabriel Facio today at 1:08 pm. On behalf of the men and women of the Apache Junction Police Department, we appreciate the support and outpouring of love from the community. A little piece of us was lost as Officer Facio took his last breath surrounded by family and friends. He was a beloved father, husband, son, brother, friend and police officer who showed his passion for people through his service to others.

Since Monday’s critical incident, he showed remarkable strength and resilience. Surrounded by loved ones and lifted by the strength of your prayers from both near and far, he held on as long as he could.

Tragically, the harm caused by a senseless act of violence was too great.

Officer Facio’s impact on this department and community will never be forgotten. His service, spirit, and sacrifice will remain part of our story forever.

As his family navigates unimaginable loss, we stand beside them now and always. They will forever be part of the AJPD family.

This is an incredibly difficult moment for all of us at the department. The support from our community has been overwhelming, and we draw strength from it.

We will carry Officer Facio’s memory forward by continuing to serve with honor, integrity, compassion, and dedication — the very values he exemplified every day.

Please continue to hold his loved ones, and all of us at AJPD, in your thoughts.

AJPD Identifies Officer Injured in Line of Duty

We have identified the officer injured in yesterday’s officer-involved shooting as Officer Gabriel Facio, a three-year veteran of the Apache Junction Police Department.

Officer Facio remains in critical condition. We are holding onto hope and standing beside him and his family during this incredibly difficult time.

The subject of the incident has been identified as 37-year-old Roger Nunez.

We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support we’ve received from the community. Many have asked how they can help — one meaningful way is through words.
