The Arizona Police Association is deeply disappointed by the public statement issued by Tempe City Councilmembers Bobby Nichols and Brooke St. George regarding the recent police incident in Tempe.
Public confidence in our institutions depends on responsible leadership, especially during incidents that draw significant public attention. While every elected official has the right to express concern, that responsibility also requires restraint, fairness, and a commitment to the facts. By publicly suggesting this incident was influenced by race before an independent investigation has been completed, these councilmembers reached conclusions unsupported by the evidence currently available.
Allegations of racial bias are among the most serious accusations that can be made against a law enforcement officer. They should never be made without credible evidence. When elected officials imply discriminatory intent before the facts are known, they undermine the integrity of the investigative process, unfairly damage the reputations of the officers involved, and erode public confidence in a fair and impartial review.
Most troubling, statements like these do not unite communities, they divide them. Framing this incident through the lens of race before the investigation is complete only deepens the divide between law enforcement and the community. At a time when thoughtful leadership is needed most, rhetoric that fuels distrust serves no one.
The Arizona Police Association has always supported transparency and accountability when the facts warrant it.
We are equally committed to defending officers against premature conclusions and ensuring they receive the same fairness and due process afforded to every citizen.
We urge all public officials to allow the investigative process to run its course before assigning motives or blame. Public trust is strengthened when leaders seek the truth before reaching conclusions. Arizona's law enforcement officersand the communities they serve deserve nothing less.
