Tetra String Quartet

Tetra String Quartet Serving the community + empowering the next generation through performing and teaching chamber music. Tetra’s ongoing Play Out!

The Tetra String Quartet is redefining the role of chamber music in today’s society. With relevance and versatility at the forefront of its mission, Tetra performs with the goal of connecting with all audiences. As both educators and performers, the quartet has toured throughout the United States, Europe, and South America. Formed in 2010, they chose the name “tetra”, from the prefix meaning four,

imagining the power of four individuals uniting in the spirit of change, creativity, and collaboration. Invested in their home state of Arizona, Tetra became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to create more opportunities that link performance with public service. Their strong local presence engages audiences from every corner of the community and reflects their belief that access to the arts is an essential human right. initiative expands access to the community by putting music where it’s not. In 2015, Tetra created the Phoenix chapter of Azure Family Concerts. These free events are fun, friendly, and engaging performances tailored to those on the autism spectrum or with similar sensory processing challenges. In an effort to further connect with diverse populations, the quartet regularly performs for the elderly at memory care and assisted living facilities and youth at the Maricopa County Juvenile Detention Center. Tetra has been invited to share the impact of their work at events including TEDx Arrowhead Ranch’s “Act Today, Change Tomorrow”, and Stanford University’s Summer Arts Institute, “Why Music Matters”. Equally at home in the classroom as on stage, the quartet has performed educational concerts for thousands of K-12 students. These interactive concert experiences are designed to enhance existing curriculums and introduce active listening to ignite curiosity and reflection. Beyond these presentations, Tetra maintains a chamber music residency project with area elementary, middle, and high schools and has been annually awarded a City of Tempe Arts Grant since 2013. As Teaching Artists, Tetra has been featured at Arizona State University, Arizona Musicfest, Phoenix Chamber Music Society, SOUNDS Academy, West Valley Arts Council, Young Audiences, and the Musical Instrument Museum. In 2014 & 2015, the quartet was selected to present sessions on their curriculum and musical entrepreneurship at the American String Teacher’s Association National Conference. With a desire to inspire the next generation, Tetra created the Tetra Chamber Music Institute (TCMI). The mission of TCMI is to train young musicians to perform in small ensembles with excellence and channel their creative strengths to effect positive change in themselves and the community. What began in 2012 as a summer camp, has expanded into two ‘Summer Workshops’ and a year-round afterschool chamber music program, the first of its kind in Arizona. As an alternative OR addition to youth orchestra programs, TCMI focuses on each student as an individual with the goal of nurturing each participant intellectually, emotionally, and musically.

Today, we are wrapping up our graduating TCMI senior highlights with two very special musicians! We are so sad to say bye to 11 seniors this year, but we know they will carry our TCMI values and be fearless leaders wherever they go!
Clare has been a part of TCMI for 6 years and graduates this year with a plan to be a violin music performance major at the University of Denver, Lamont School of Music. Among her favorite memories are: learning how to balance small talk with active listening; maintaining eye contact and communication without words; and being a cooperative ensemble member. Thank you for sharing your love of music with us, Clare! We can't wait to hear the beautiful music you create in the coming years!
Daniel joined TCMI in 2025 and immediately fell in love with the power of chamber music. Incredibly attentive and adaptive to his ensemble, Daniel learned over 3 different string quartet works in two semesters and led in orchestra with conviction every single week. We are so lucky to have had Daniel share his chamber music skills with his viola section, and can't wait to see Daniel's leadership change the world around him. Thank you for making our community a better place, Daniel!

Let's give it up for another amazing two seniors graduating from our TCMI Year Round program this year!
Devoted violist Evelyn (.swalberg) has been one of the most enthusiastic musicans at TCMI over the last year. She notes that she will never forget the value of learning about people's different backgrounds and personalities in order to broaden her own knowledge and understanding of music and humanity. We are so proud of what you brought to your ensemble work with us, Evelyn! We will miss you when you leave for BYU-Provo next year as a STEM major! Congratulations on your BYU Presidential Scholarship!
After 4 years with TCMI, cellist Evie (.wren) leaves us with happy memories of performing at AZMusicFest and the Musical Instrument Museum. She shares that she learned the "power of listening to other people's stories" and that she earned music scholarships to all three Arizona universities next year! Congrats, Evie!

We have been hearing amazing memories from our seniors this week, and today are featuring these three powerful graduates:
Laura () has spent most of her high school career with and will soon leave for Indiana, where she will be a mechanical engineering major ! Like many of our graduates, Laura says she learned important lessons about communication, which is going to be important to her training as an engineer for sure. Laura, we will miss you and can't wait to hear about your successes in the Midwest!
Cellist Ryan Ellsworth will attend next year as a nursing major, having trained for 2 years with on various methods of "pushing myself out of my comfort zone." We think he came to the right place for that life lesson! Ryan, we will miss your hilarious humor and endless energy in rehearsals. Please come back and let us know how you're doing! We will be thrilled to see you in a future audience at one of our concerts.
This year, violinist Leah () is graduating with a more solid understanding of persistence through difficulty. She says that TCMI taught her that "starting new things might seem really scary at first, but it almost always pays off." We are so proud to have been a part of your education, Leah, and we wish you an amazing start at this fall!

This week, we are highlighting TCMI's incredible graduating seniors! Make sure you check out yesterday's two featured students. Today, we are featuring Juniper and Joshua!
Juniper could not have been a better match for TCMI with her cheery attitude and powerful cello performances. This senior has learned so much and brought so much to us that we feel a little teary-eyed saying goodbye! Juniper, we are so touched that you were able to learn how to become a better public speaker and we hope that you can come back soon to lead our incoming groups of TCMI students in the future. ASU is lucky to have you in their Conservation Biology major!
Joshua Clay () has been with TCMI for 5 years and one of our favorite people to have around. Josh graduates this year and will soon be a Conservation Biology major up the street undefined , so we very much hope that will make it easy for him to come back and teach with us! Josh, we will miss your humor, your kindness, and your memory-making antics. That viola leadership you brought to TCMI ensembles is a model for all to learn from.
