With now over 7 million members and supporters worldwide, Amnesty International is the largest organization in the world focused on defending and promoting human rights for all people. Allowing no corporate or political party affiliations or funding, Amnesty International remains one of the most respected and credible independent voices in the world regarding human rights issues. What are "Human R
ights"? A really good way to get a grasp of this concept is to take a peek at the "Universal Declaration of Human Rights" (UDHR), which was ratified by the U.S. and 47 other countries making up the U.N. General Assembly on December 10, 1948. Very similar to the U.S. "Bill of Rights", these are things most Americans take for granted today. Here's a link to a copy of the UDHR:

* What exactly does Amnesty DO? Here are a few things:
Research
Amnesty International keeps vigilant watch on the rights of people around the world and publishes hundreds of independent reports based on our rigorous research, free of corporate and government influence. Action
Through our dynamic campaigns and long-term casework, Amnesty International members propel key human rights concerns and stories of individuals at risk into the glare of the international media and demand the attention of government officials, corporations, international institutions and policy makers. Starting from a single letter writing campaign in 1961, Amnesty supporters now produce many thousands of letters every month. Of course, MANY other tools have been added to the arsenal, to help raise awareness and "shine a light" on human rights abuses. Advocacy
We combine high-level legislative work, media outreach and grassroots mobilization to shape and promote legislation and policies to advance human rights, protect individuals and free prisoners of conscience.
