Senator Margaret Chase Smith (R-ME), born in 1897, was the first senator to challenge Senator Joseph McCarthy’s anti-communist crusade, making a speech in 1950 called "Declaration of Conscience" where she stated:

"Those of us who shout the loudest about Americanism in making character assassinations are all too frequently those who, by our own words and acts, ignore some of the basic principles of Americanism: the right to criticize; the right to hold unpopular beliefs; the right to protest; the right of independent thought."

Thank you, Congress, for this piece of legislation. Celebrate Title IX and a small step towards women's equality.

On this day in 1972, Title IX was signed by President Nixon. Title IX was inarguably one of the most important legislation initiatives passed for women and girls since suffrage in 1920. This legislation guaranteed equal access and equal opportunity for women and men in almost all aspects of our educational systems. While it initially was used to guarantee equality in access to resources in athletics, it has recently enabled female students to hold their universities accountable when it comes to addressing sexual assault on campus.
