School is out for the summer in Ukraine, after “Last Bell" celebrations were held throughout the country. The annual event for children and their parents is a tradition in Ukraine, formally closing the academic year and sending the kids off for summer break.

In Odessa, Rabbi Avraham Wolff wished students at the Jewish school a joyful summer and encouraged them to cherish every moment of their summer break. He thanked the dedicated teachers who supported the students through a difficult and challenging year.

Israel’s Ambassador to Ukraine, Michael Brodsky was a special guest at the Odessa ceremony. He congratulated all the students and teachers on completing the school year, and he specifically addressed graduates as they enter the next chapter of their lives.

The ceremony in Odessa included an especially poignant moment when the graduates came to the stage, one by one, with symbolic suitcases filled with everything they were taking from their school years: knowledge, Jewish values, experiences, friendships, and memories. The graduates also made remarks, expressing their gratitude to the parents, teachers, mentors, and friends who helped guide them along the way.

At Last Bell celebrations across Ukraine, parents, students and teachers exchanged warm wishes for a healthy, safe, and joyful summer, and hope that the next school year will be filled with peace.

In September, schools will reopen and students will be welcomed back to their classrooms, ready for another year of learning, growth, and achievement.

Together we save lives and restore hope.

The night of June 1, 2026, brought death and destruction to Ukraine. Drones and missiles pounded several Ukrainian cities, killing at least 7 people in Kyiv and 16 in Dnipro, and wounding more than 100 others; two of the individuals killed were children.

More than 41,000 residents of Kyiv sought refuge in underground stations, the most ever during a night-time air raid alert.

Hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles were fired on Ukraine, hitting key civilian infrastructure including five medical facilities in Kyiv. Several residential and commercial blocks in the city were damaged, sparking fires, burning cars, and hurling debris onto a school.

Further east, in addition to Dnipro, attacks were also reported in Kharkiv, where 14 people were wounded, including a child.

The citizens of Ukraine were warned by their government to pay attention to all air raid alerts as further attacks are expected.

In the meantime, people are digging out cars buried under rubble and salvaging items from destroyed apartments.

We hope and pray the attacks will be over soon with no further loss of life or injuries. Our staff and volunteers are working hard to provide all possible assistance to those in need. Together we save lives and restore hope.

Arkady lives alone in a village near Rivne, following the death of his parents. For many years, Arkady cared for his mother and father, both of whom suffered from chronic illnesses. Unfortunately, with no one else available to provide the critical support they needed, Arkady was forced to leave his job and concentrate on taking care of them.

After his parents succumbed to their illnesses, Arkady had difficulty finding work, causing him to struggle financially and emotionally. To make matters worse, a severe storm damaged the slate roof of his house, with no financial assistance from the local government, Arkady had to buy supplies (slate) on credit and make arrangements for the repairs to be completed. It was only with support from JRNU and the local Jewish community that Arkady was able to have the job completed and see his home restored.

Recently, more than 30 leaders from the Or Avner Jewish schools in Ukraine gathered in Dnipro for a three-day seminar to discuss ways to strengthen Jewish education across the country and support Jewish youth.

During the seminar, held at the Menorah Jewish Community Center, participants explored innovative teaching approaches, exchanged professional experiences, and addressed the complex challenges currently facing Jewish schools in Ukraine.

The seminar received support from Israel’s Ministry of Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism, along with “United” — a global initiative of the Ministry that supports more than 650 schools around the world by providing advanced methodologies, up-to-date educational content, and practical tools for creating inspiring learning environments.

Rabbi Shmuel Kaminezki, Chief Rabbi of Dnipro, offered words of encouragement and blessing to the school directors and addressed a wide range of questions related to education, Jewish family life, and strengthening Jewish identity.

The seminar included several sessions devoted to the topic of safety and preparedness in educational institutions, given the ongoing crisis. One session, titled “A Tradition of Responsibility: Schools Facing Threats,” was led by Security Director Ilya Goldberg and Public Affairs Director Maria Mironenko.

In addition to the formal sessions, the seminar provided an important opportunity for professional networking and discussion of best practices.

We were honored to provide support for this important gathering. Jewish schools play a critical role in supporting the youth of Ukraine, far beyond religious teachings. For many children over the past 4 years, schools have been a lifeline, providing nourishing meals, shelter, and emotional support.

Together we save lives and restore hope.

Shavuot arrived in Ukraine along with tens of thousands of holiday packages delivered to cities, towns, and villages across the country! Children enjoyed ice cream parties and senior gathered to eat cheesecake. Families enjoyed fresh yogurt, cheeses, and other dairy products in the holiday food parcels we distributed.

“Our goal is to bring a little sweetness to the children and to Jewish families for Shavuot,” said one of the rabbis in Kyiv. “The families here are going through an unimaginable period, but we are not giving up on a single child or a single family.”

In Mykolaiv, the Jewish community celebrated Shavuot with a beautiful new Torah scroll dedicated to the city’s central synagogue. Hundreds of community members, guests, local dignitaries, and students from the city’s Jewish schools carried the scroll in a procession through the streets, with live music, singing, and dancing.

The celebration continued as the Torah scroll was welcomed into the synagogue, where the existing scrolls were taken from the Ark in honor of the new addition. A local choir performed as members of the congregation danced and filled the synagogue with joy. After the ceremony, the large crowd gathered for a festive meal, celebrating the dedication of the new Torah scroll.

The Shavuot treats and festivities offered a much-needed respite from the daily stress and strain of the ongoing conflict, and preserving religious traditions infuses a sense of normalcy into chaotic times.

Together we save lives and restore hope.

Recently the Jewish Community of Kremenchuk was presented with a beautiful ancient Torah Scroll that had been lovingly restored by the National Sofer Center in Dnipro. A delegation from Kremenchuk, led by Chief Rabbi Shlomo Salamon, attended the ceremony held in the office of the Chief Rabbi of Dnipro, Rabbi Shmuel Kaminezky, on the 18th floor of the Menorah Center, world’s largest Jewish community center. The joyful event, attended by members of the Jewish communities of Dnipro and Kremenchuk, included a celebratory meal.

“This Torah Scroll is especially meaningful for our community because it stood at the very beginning of the modern history of Jewish life in Kremenchuk,” said Chief Rabbi of Kremenchuk, Rabbi Shlomo Salamon. “Nearly twenty-eight years ago, just two weeks before I arrived in Kremenchuk, I was informed about this Torah Scroll, and it was entrusted to me. I arrived in our community together with this Torah Scroll, and throughout all these years it accompanied the growth and life of our community. Its restoration therefore holds special spiritual and emotional significance for us.”

The extensive and painstaking work involved in the restoration was made possible by a generous member of the Jewish Community of Dnipro who financed the entire process and even donated a new mantle for the Torah Scroll; a new Torah crown was also included.

Rabbi Salamon and other leaders of the Kremenchuk Jewish community provide critical support to many families in need of physical, emotional, and spiritual assistance. Together we save lives and restore hope.

Jewish camps have long been an important part of summer for families in the United States and throughout the world. In Ukraine, these camps have taken on greater significance over the past few years, particularly for children who have lost loved ones and/or had to flee their homes.

For the past 4 years, despite the many challenges associated with the ongoing conflict, we have found a way to bring thousands of kids to camp, both day and overnight camps. Some of the camps also offer programs for parents who are in desperate need of a respite from the continued crisis.

Safety at the camps is a top priority, as the threat of attack is ever present. Each camp is equipped with shelters, and the children are trained and reminded of the many safety protocols in place. Campers are under the constant supervision of trained staff who provide psychological support in addition to directing activities.

The camps offer a mix of recreational activities (indoors and out), educational opportunities, and time for fun and relaxation. The camp leaders and staff are deeply committed to helping each child process trauma, manage stress, and begin to heal, emotionally and spiritually.

The Jewish summer camps in Ukraine offer kids a place to laugh, learn, build friendships, and relax. Children are provided transportation, safe and secure facilities, nourishing meals, and emotional comfort that is so desperately needed.

We are grateful to the many supporters around the world who make the camps possible, and to the staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to make them a success. Together we save lives and restore hope.

Over the past three days, massive drone attacks on Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine have resulted in the deaths of more than 30 people including 4 children. Eleven people were rescued from under a large pile of rubble when a large residential building collapsed. In all, 18 apartment buildings were destroyed in the capital city.

In Kyiv, debris from a downed drone fell on the roof of a 16-story residential building, sparking a fire, but fortunately no injuries were reported. Two people were hurt in the central Cherkasy region, and damage was also reported in the Zhytomyr and Chernihiv regions. Two people were injured in strikes on Dnipro and Kherson, and drones also hit energy infrastructure in the Mykolaiv region, causing blackouts.

Strikes were reported in the Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, and Ternopil oblasts. At least three people were injured in an attack on Khmelnytskyi oblast; the victims are hospitalized in moderate condition. In Odessa, two people were injured in the drone strike that sparked a blaze in a courtyard, with several cars catching fire.

Throughout Ukraine, targets included critical infrastructure and essential services in major cities, including energy facilities, defense industry enterprises, and government buildings. The brutal strikes came just one day after 14 regions were under attack, when residential and railway infrastructure in Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv oblasts were hit along with the port infrastructure in Odessa and energy facilities in Poltava oblast.

Our leaders, staff, and volunteers in all the local Jewish communities are checking on residents and providing assistance as needed. Together we save lives and restore hope.

Each day in cities and towns across Ukraine, our staff and volunteers feed thousands of people in the various Jewish communities. Elderly residents join us at the soup kitchens, and families arrive at synagogues and community centers to receive food parcels.

At the same time, we are preparing for the upcoming holiday of Shavuot, when children will enjoy ice cream parties and seniors will gather to eat cheesecake. Fresh yogurt, cheeses, and other dairy products are loaded into refrigerator trucks that are criss-crossing the country, making stops in many cities and towns to deliver special treats to thousands of families. The holiday festivities offer a much needed respite from the daily stress and strain from the ongoing conflict, and preserving religious traditions infuses a sense of normalcy into chaotic times.

We are grateful for the hard work and dedication of our staff and volunteers as well as our generous donors who make it all possible. Together we save lives and restore hope.
