Today, we pause and remember. 🤎

On August 20, 1619, the first documented enslaved Africans arrived at Point Comfort, Virginia: an arrival that marked a painful turning point in the history of what would become the United States.

We honor the ancestors who endured the unthinkable, carried culture across oceans, nurtured families, created community, and held onto their humanity in the face of oppression. Their strength was never erased. Their stories are still being reclaimed. Their legacy lives in us.

On August 16, 2024, the Springfield 1908 Race Riot site in Springfield, Illinois, was designated a national monument. The 1908 riot brought devastating violence against Springfield’s Black community, yet its impact helped catalyze the founding of the NAACP and a broader movement for justice.

We honor the ancestors who endured, organized, resisted, and paved the way. Their courage reminds us that remembrance is not passive: it is a call to protect truth, build community, and carry the work forward.

Incorporated on August 15, 1887, Eatonville is recognized as one of the oldest self-governing, all-Black incorporated municipalities in the United States: a powerful testament to Black leadership, ownership, and community building.

Founded by Black residents determined to shape their own future, Eatonville became a place where families could govern, grow, and thrive together. It was also the childhood home of literary icon Zora Neale Hurston, whose stories, scholarship, and creative spirit brought Eatonville’s rich culture to the world. 📚🤎

Today, we honor Austin Dabney: a courageous Black patriot whose service helped expand the meaning of freedom and belonging in Georgia. ✨

On August 14, 1786, Dabney became the first Black man in Georgia to be awarded land by the state for his service in the Revolutionary War. An enslaved man who served in the Georgia militia, he fought bravely, was wounded at the Battle of Kettle Creek, and later received 250 acres of land in recognition of his sacrifice.

Austin Dabney’s story reminds us that Black history is American history: and that courage, service, and determination can move history forward. His legacy continues to call us toward ownership, excellence, and freedom for generations to come. 🤎🌿
