Young people don’t need to wait until they’re older to make a difference.

Here, they’re working side by side, preparing mangrove seedlings and learning what it means to care for an ecosystem together. It’s hands-on work, but it’s also an opportunity to build curiosity, responsibility, and a real connection with the environment.

When young people are given the chance to participate, conservation becomes something they experience, not just something they hear about.

And perhaps that’s where lasting environmental stewardship begins: working together, learning together, and caring enough to keep showing up.

Before a single tree goes into the ground, the land has already given us clues about what belongs there.

Slope. Soil. Sun exposure. Water availability. Existing vegetation. Even the way water moves after a storm can influence what gets planted, where it goes, and whether it has a real chance to survive.

Good restoration isn’t about filling an empty space with as many trees as possible. It starts by understanding the ecosystem that’s already there and working with it, not against it.

That’s the part of restoration people don’t always see in the planting-day photos.

Observe the land. Understand the site. Then restore.

Planting a tree is easy. Keeping it alive is the real work.

A successful restoration project isn’t measured by how many seedlings go into the ground on planting day. It’s measured by what happens months and years later.

Did the right species go in the right place?
Was there enough water?
Was the tree protected through drought, heat, wildlife pressure, and changing conditions?
Did someone come back to check on it?

That’s why our work goes beyond planting. Seas of Trees focuses on the care, local knowledge, community involvement, and long-term commitment that give young trees a real chance to become healthy forests.

Because 1,000 trees planted means very little if they never get the chance to grow.

A tree can be planted in a few minutes. The exchange around it can last much longer.

This moment is about more than restoration. It’s about people from different backgrounds working side by side, sharing knowledge, and caring for the same piece of land.

That’s one of the things we value most about this work: the way environmental restoration creates space for connection, learning, and mutual respect.

The tree grows, but so does the relationship around it.

As communities around the world face wildfires, extreme heat, stronger storms, and rising seas, one thing has become increasingly clear: healthy ecosystems are more important than ever.

With World Mangrove Day approaching on July 26, we're taking a moment to recognize one of nature's most valuable coastal ecosystems.

Mangroves help protect shorelines from erosion and storm surges, provide essential habitat for marine life, and store remarkable amounts of carbon in their roots and surrounding soils. They are a powerful example of how nature helps communities adapt to a changing climate.

This photo was taken during our mangrove restoration project in Cambodia, where volunteers and local partners came together to restore these incredible forests.

Colorado continues to face challenging wildfire conditions, and our hearts are with everyone affected.

Our thoughts remain with the families facing evacuations and uncertainty, the communities impacted by smoke and fire, and the firefighters, pilots, first responders, and support crews continuing to work under incredibly difficult conditions.

We are deeply grateful to everyone protecting lives, homes, wildlife, and Colorado’s landscapes. We also recognize the neighbors, volunteers, shelters, and local organizations coming together to support one another.

Please continue following guidance from local emergency officials, respecting evacuation and closure notices, and looking out for those around you.
