Sharing in honor of February being Spay/Neuter awareness month!

A lot of people do not know how female dog heat cycles work. Pregnancy does NOT occur when your female is bleeding. This is known as the Proestrus stage which is 7-10 days long.

When the bleeding has become very light or has stopped entirely, that is when pregnancy occurs. This is known as the Estrus stage and it is 9-14 days long.

If you have an intact female and she has gone into heat and you are trying to avoid an unwanted pregnancy, you need to keep her contained and far away from intact males for at least a month! This can be very very difficult. Intact males will jump fences, break open kennels, and travel for miles if they catch a scent of a female.

And that brings me to my next lesson! Intact males who seem well trained and never roam far away from home will indeed travel VERY far if they smell a female in heat. No matter how well trained! They will dig out of your fence, they will chew off cables. You will have a very rough time fighting against natural instincts.

Thank you for reading! Please share this πŸ™ Maybe this post will keep an unwanted litter from happening!
