Misty’s Mission - Bring Vets to Tehachapi and Surrounding Areas

Misty’s Mission - Bring Vets to Tehachapi and Surrounding Areas Let’s bring emergency vet care, education, and resources for all animal owners in our area.

Our mission is to restore and strengthen access to large and mixed animal veterinary care in our rural and surrounding communities. We aim to remove the financial, emotional, and logistical barriers that prevent veterinarians from practicing in underserved areas by creating sustainable funding, housing support, and mental health resources. Through community partnership and long-term planning, we are building a system that allows veterinarians to focus on healing, not just surviving.

Misty's Mission is going to take a team. We simply cannot bring a vet to our area without the help of the community. Please see our last post about the committees we need in order to move forward with this project!

We know we have been quiet online but we are still working behind the scenes toward our goal of bringing vets to this area. Before we schedule the community meeting we are looking for volunteers to join committees that are essential to getting Misty's Mission off the ground and running.

Board/Nonprofit Formation Committee-

File nonprofit paperwork, create bylaws, establish leadership roles (President, Treasurer, Secretary), set up the community fund and financial policies, ensure transparency and accountability, work on partnerships with local government and organizations (3 members. Must interview)

Fundraising and Events Committee-

Plan fundraising events, organize donation drives, week local business sponsorships, manage online fundraising campaigns, build recurring donor programs, coordinate with the marketing team to promote events ( Unlimited Members)

Grants, Research & Veterinary Outreach Committee

Research and apply for grants, contact veterinary schools and residency programs, build relationships with veterinary associations, identify veterinarians who may want to relocate, research successful rural vet programs in other communities, gather best practices (Unlimited Members)

Community Data & Needs Assessment Committee-

Count horses, livestock, and animal populations, survey local ranchers and animal owners, document emergency vet shortages, gather letters of support from the community, provide data for grant applications and recruitment (Unlimited Members)

If you are interested in joining a committee please fill out this google form (If you are unable to fill it out please message us)

Misty’s Mission is a community effort to bring large and mixed animal veterinarians back to the Tehachapi area. We are building committees to help establish a nonprofit, fundraise, gather data, and support incoming veterinarians.

Is there anyone in this group with experience starting a community fund?

We are preparing to launch a fund that will help cover veterinary start-up costs and long-term support, and while we’re very familiar with organizing fundraisers, we need guidance on the structural side. Specifically, we’re looking for advice on:

• How to properly set up a community fund
• Where and how the money should be held
• Whether we need a designated treasurer or managing board

If you have experience in nonprofit setup, community funding, or financial management, your insight would be invaluable. Please comment below or message us, we truly appreciate any guidance as we take this next step.

We’re starting this mission because our community is in a crisis when it comes to large and mixed animal veterinary care, and it’s time we do something about it.

Across rural areas, veterinarians are leaving the profession or choosing small animal clinics due to overwhelming startup costs, housing challenges, emotional burnout, and lack of support. At the same time, emergency services are being misused, overrun, and underfunded.

Here’s what we’re building:

✅ A community fund to cover veterinary startup costs
✅ Mental health support for veterinarians and staff
✅ Housing assistance to help attract and retain providers
✅ A system where vets are paid immediately for their services
✅ A sustainable payment loop where client payments replenish the fund

This isn’t a short-term fix. This is a long-term solution to bring veterinary care back to where it belongs, in our communities.

We’re here to start the conversation.

If you are a veterinarian, rancher, community leader, donor, or someone who believes in supporting those who care for our animals, we want to hear from you.

Comment below, message us, or share this page. Let’s build this together.

‼️Tehachapi Livestock & Horse Owners; We Need Your Voices!‼️

We lost our horse, Misty, because we couldn’t get a large-animal veterinarian to our area in time, and it completely broke us. After talking with other families, we realized we weren’t alone. So many people in our community have faced emergencies with their horses, cattle, goats, and other livestock and had nowhere to turn.

Our community is truly in a large-animal vet crisis. We have livestock owners, ranchers, horse families, and 4-H/FFA kids who are all struggling without local veterinary support.

In Misty’s memory, we’ve started Misty’s Mission, a project dedicated to bringing a large-animal veterinarian to the Tehachapi region. We’re collecting stories and data to send to vet schools and national programs that help veterinarians move into underserved areas.

If you’ve ever faced a situation where you couldn’t get a vet when you needed one, your story matters. Please consider sharing here:
