You don't need a fancy structure to store a lot of food through winter. This Root Cellar cost a total of $5 for spikes to fasten the cedar logs together. It's been in use for 17 years. The structure extends back about 8' into the hill and is about 5' high at the back. Walls are of vertical White Cedar logs (salvaged from a tornado that hit our farm) stuffed with Sphagnum Moss and then backfilled with soil. Sloping roof (also of cedar logs) has a repurposed pool liner to shed water. Screening keeps out critters and bags of leaves add insulation around the entrance. By: Connaught Nursery
