Yesterday the Teaneck league held our annual dinner meeting to review this past year’s achievements and outline our activities for the coming year. Mary Amoroso, Bergen County Commissioner, was our guest speaker, leading us in lively discussion of the many county services that are available and answering questions about education, affordable housing initiatives, services for senior citizens and election security.

Important to Remember: On this date in 1919, the 19th Amendment passed the Senate. Fifteen months later, it was ratified by the necessary 36 state legislatures, giving American women the right to vote.

Susan B. Anthony drafted the original amendment, with the help of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and it was first formally introduced in 1878. It sat in committee for nine years before it went before the Senate in 1887 and was voted down. Over the next decades, several individual states approved women's voting rights, but a Constitutional amendment wasn't considered again until 1914. It was repeatedly defeated, and an anti-suffrage movement campaigned against it, claiming that it was unfeminine for women to venture outside their natural domestic sphere.

John R. Lewis Voter Empowerment Act of New Jersey Committee Hearing!

S282, the John R. Lewis Voter Empowerment Act of New Jersey, is up for a Senate Committee hearing this Thursday, May 21st — and we need you there.

Join the League of Women Voters and our partners as we push for the passage of this state Voting Rights Act. Show up, fill the room, and make it clear that New Jersey stands with every voter.

In the wake of Louisiana v. Callais and relentless attacks on voting rights across the country, the stakes could not be higher. Passing the NJVRA would send an clear message: New Jersey will defend the freedom to vote and ensure fair representation for every community.

This is our moment. Be there!

When: Thursday, May 21st at 10:00am
Where: Senate Judiciary Committee (Committee Room 4, 1st Floor, State House Annex, Trenton, NJ)

Time is running short! With our April 30 deadline quickly approaching, we’re asking for your support. Can you help us reach our goal with a $5, $10, or $20 donation? If you’re able to, please consider supporting democracy. Every gift, no matter the size, will help us continue our important work as we head into the 2026 midterm elections.

In a moment when democracy needs all of us, even the smallest actions matter. Thank you for being a part of this effort and for supporting what we do!

Our league co-sponsored the Middle Schools Civics Bowl tonight, a big success! Several dozen 7th and 8th graders participated in a civics education trivia contest covering questions about local, state and federal government as well as a final round on voting rights. We have much to be proud of - a good time was had by all!

Many thanks to the two principals (Terrence Williams & Nina Otadella), Ashley Sularz (Supervisor of Humanities & Gifted Ed), Connie Le for assistance with PR and the local businesses who contributed prizes for the winners (Golden Grill, CVS, Macy’s, Brier Rose Books, Sweet Tea, Carvel/Cinnabon, Different Breed Sports, Veggie Heaven and Stop & Shop).

Our Teaneck LWV volunteers have visited several senior living facilities (The Bristol in Englewood, Arbor Terrace, Brightside Manor & The Pointe in Teaneck) in the past couple of weeks to assist many of their residents with voter registrations, applying for vote-by-mail ballots, and getting information on both the upcoming primary election in June and the general election in November.
