The members of the Teaneck Fire Department, Locals 42 and 242, wish to advise residents and businesses that the Township is continuing to refine proposed Ordinance No. 1-2026, titled “Establishing Certain Recovery of Fire Department-Related Costs and Expenses,” which pertains to costs associated with motor vehicle-related incidents.

The revised ordinance is intended to apply exclusively to the soft billing of the involved motorist’s insurance carrier and will not result in direct billing to any individual or business.

At no time should residents or businesses hesitate to contact the Fire Department in the event of an emergency. The Teaneck Fire Department remains fully committed to serving and protecting our community.

As some of you may be aware, there is a hearing, and final vote, regarding Ordinance No. 1-2026 "ESTABLISHING CERTAIN RECOVERY OF FIRE
DEPARTMENT-RELATED COSTS AND EXPENSES" tomorrow 1/27/2026.

The leadership and members of Teaneck Fire Officers Local 242 and FMBA Local 42, the labor unions representing the officers and firefighters of the Teaneck Fire Department, do not support this ordinance. We had nothing to do with its creation and want to make that clear to residents.

The proposed billing practices have been in place in other jurisdiction’s within Bergen County and the state of New Jersey, with a very low success rate.
To be clear... This proposed ordinance is not coming from the fire department or its members. We will at no time bill you for our services.

We remain committed to working collaboratively with Township leadership to address budgetary and operational concerns in ways that preserve public safety, protect our residents, and maintain the integrity of emergency services.

We staff firehouses 24/7 to provide you, your families and friends, with safety, protection and the respect that every Township taxpayers deserves.
