Master Gardeners of Tazewell County

Master Gardeners of Tazewell County Master Gardeners is a volunteer program of the Cooperative Extension Service. Programs are free and open to the public.

Its purpose is to offer education for gardening, horticulture, water quality and related topics.

New Training Opportunity!

Tazewell County Master Gardeners are offering Master Gardener training on Monday evenings, 6:00-9:00 PM, at the Tazewell County Extension office, from August 12, 2013 through December 9, 2013. Master Gardeners are volunteers trained by and working with the Virginia Cooperative Extension to educate their communities on horticulture-related issues and on protecting the environment. They are extensions of the Extension.
Training includes 50 hours of course instruction, in which specialists cover topics including botany, soil, plant diseases, fertilizers, pesticides, fruits, vegetables, annuals and perennials, landscape design, and more. Course work is followed by 50 hours volunteering in education programs within the county. There is a fee of $110 for the course which includes a comprehensive Virginia Cooperative Extension Master Gardener manual.

Apple and pear grafting workshop, Tazewell Fairground, Tazewell, VA, April 6, 2013, 2 sessions (9 AM to noon, and 1-4 PM), $12/session (includes 4 rootstocks). Tazewell Master Gardeners. Call the Tazewell Extension office (988-0405) to register. Bring clean, sharp pruners. There will be a large variety of scion wood available, but you are welcome to bring your own. There may also be some cherry rootstock and scion wood.

We have canceled our fruit and ornamental tree pruning presentation for this Saturday, 1/26/13. We're still scheduled for Saturday, 2/16/13, 1:00 PM, at the Crab Orchard Museum barn. We'll cover pruning and scion wood collection. If you're interested in attending this free presentation, please call the extension office (988-0405) to register.

Tazewell County Master Gardeners will offer two free presentations on fruit and ornamental tree pruning and scion wood collection at the Crab Orchard Museum barn, in Tazewell, off route 460. Sessions will be Saturday, January 26, 2013, 1:00 PM, and Saturday, February 16, 2013, at 1:00 PM. Please call the Tazewell County Extension office (988-0405) to register for one of the sessions.

Tazewell County Extension Master Gardeners and Agriculture agent, John Blankenship, are offering 2 free information sessions and demonstrations at the Bluefield Branch of the Tazewell County Public Library: w**d identification and management at 6:00, Tuesday, 8/28/12; grass selection and planting at 6:00, Tuesday, 9/25/12. Registration not required.
