A few months ago, we received a call about a scammer actively preying on a senior citizen. The caller was a local bank manager, and he was concerned that one of their account holders, who was elderly, was on their way to the bank to withdraw approximately $45,000 to send to a scammer. The manager said that legally he was powerless to stop the withdrawal if the senior insisted on it, but he knew that the senior was being exploited, and wanted to prevent it from happening. He had already notified the senior citizen's family and they were on their way to the bank to also try and stop their loved one from being exploited.
Officers responded to the bank quickly and sure enough, the senior showed up, with the scammer still on the phone with her. He was not happy at all when one of our officers got on the phone with him and told him he wasn't going to get any money from her today if we could help it, and he began swearing and yelling obscenities at us when he realized we had stopped him in his tracks.
Sadly, despite our best efforts to convince the senior that the man on the other end of the line didn't need her money to "start up a new business" and that he had not asked her "out of the goodness of her heart", the senior remained convinced that the man was legit and insisted on sending him money to help him out. She said she would have sent him $100,000 if he would have asked her for it, and, she had the financial resources to do it. Thankfully, family members arrived on scene soon and they took over from there.
Friends, we cannot reiterate this one enough. As our loved ones age, they become susceptible to those wanting to exploit and prey on them, so please keep an eye on them. It's a good idea to keep an eye on their finances also, and become involved, if possible, in their financial decision making if you think they are vulnerable to anyone wanting to do them harm. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! 🙌
We are also sharing an article with a list of common senior scams. Keep an eye out of them!
