Panelist Spotlight: David Derrick Jr. - Director of Moana 2

Director Dave Derrick Jr. made his directorial debut with Moana 2 in 2024. He was a critical member of the original feature storyboarding “How Far I’ll Go” and “I am Moana.” Working on Moana and Moana 2 allowed David the rare opportunity to tell stories that celebrate his Sāmoan heritage.

Before Moana 2, David had contributed creatively to many animated movies, serving as a Head of Story and Story artist. His credits include Strange World, Encanto, Raya and the Last Dragon, The Lion King, Moana, Rise of the Guardians, Megamind, How to Train Your Dragon, Bee Movie, and Flushed Away. David attended the University of Utah and CalArts.

David will be featured on our panel and will also lead two dynamic workshops.

Wayfinding Week is here—and with it, a chance to sit with the stories that have carried our people across generations.

Each night, SAILI brings us together to hear from those who hold and share the knowledge of our ancestors—stories of land, sea, stars, and identity. These are not performances. They are offerings.

From the legacy of our families in Utah, to the sacred responsibilities of a taupou, to navigating by the stars—we’re invited to listen, reflect, and remember.

Congratulations to the masterminds behind Creative Pacific Foundation, our dear friends Afa Ah Loo and Benjamin Powell, for an incredible week filled with artistry, creativity, fashion, and connection. The designers, speakers, and workshop facilitators truly showcased Pacific excellence through their passion and creativity. We’ve gained so much from the experiences shared this week, made many new friends, and we can’t thank you enough for the love and intentionality you’ve put into creating spaces of growth and unity for our communities.

This past weekend has been the best kind of busy. On Saturday we held our Community Welcome and Ava Ceremony for our honored guests Miss Pacific Islands Moemoana Schwenke and her wonderful parents Fred and Maryjane 🤎 We are so incredibly grateful for everyone who participated, attended and supported this special occasion. Fa’afetai tele lava to SLCC PUA for hosting, Creative Pacific Foundation, the Utah matai counsel for their guidance and knowledge, our VIP supporters from Friday evening’s reception (recap to come shortly! 😊), West Jordan POP Class and all of the performers for their hand in making this event everything that it was.
