For you to truly understand the significance and importance of the impact of your donations on the lives of children in Haiti, you have to understand how horrific the circumstances around them have become – so I’ve included below a statement released by the UN just a couple days ago – keep in mind, this is the context in which our kids are living, and the context in which your donations are providing them both food and safe living conditions:

Haiti is facing “one of the most severe and rapidly deteriorating humanitarian crises in the Western Hemisphere,” a senior UN aid official warned on Friday, underscoring the need for continued global attention to alleviate suffering there.

I thought this was very cool – Rolin (the preacher at the church we work with in St Michel, Haiti) and his son Roberde have started a special Sunday Afternoon Youth Service for all the kids at the St Michel church – Roberde sent me this 1-minute video of the kids singing – especially if you’ve been to Haiti with us before, I’m sure this will bring back some great memories:

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

I wanted to thank each of you who’ve continued helping out with the Housing Fund for the St Michel Orphanage, which is our primary ministry in Haiti right now (and which we are the sole supporters of).

Your love and generosity has enabled us to provide safe, comfortable housing for the children there, and none of this ever would have been possible without you! There is always work that needs to be done, and improvements we’re trying to make, so all your contributions are greatly needed, and greatly appreciated.

CURRENT FAMINE CONDITIONS IN HAITI...

The United Nations has identified Haiti as one of only five countries in the world – and the only one in the Western Hemisphere – where a large percentage of the population continues to face catastrophic levels of starvation.

A few excerpts from the latest UN “Hunger Hotspots” report in July:

• Currently more than 5.7 million people (51% of the population) are experiencing Crisis Levels of acute food insecurity – the highest number recorded since analyses began in Haiti in 2013

• Acute food insecurity is predicted to deteriorate further in the coming months

• Currency weakness continues to fuel high food prices, with year-on-year food inflation reaching 37.5%

• Haiti’s famine conditions are being driven by a number of factors, including escalating gang violence, protracted economic decline, and recent flooding and landslides leading to crop losses

• In addition, the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season is forecast to feature above-normal activity, posing further risks to crops, infrastructure and livelihoods

Within this context, I just wanted to say a huge thank you again to all of you who’ve continued providing food assistance for the St Michel Orphanage – your dollars are literally saving lives, and all of it is being done in the name of Jesus through our beloved, trusted partners at the Church of Christ in St Michel, Haiti, who we’ve enjoyed a long and loving partnership with since 2013.

CURRENT FAMINE CONDITIONS IN HAITI

Almost 3 million children are currently facing emergency levels of food insecurity in Haiti

According to the most recent stats by UNICEF, almost 3 million children in Haiti – one quarter of the entire child population – are facing critical levels of food insecurity. Persistent armed violence, repeated displacement, and lack of sufficient humanitarian access continue to threaten vulnerable families, who continue to grapple with significant lack of food and high levels of acute malnutrition.

“We are looking at a scenario where parents can no longer provide care and nutrition to their children as a result of ongoing violence, extreme poverty, and a persistent economic crisis,” said Geeta Narayan, UNICEF Representative in Haiti. “Life-saving actions, such as screening children at risk for wasting and stunting, and ensuring malnourished children have access to therapeutic treatment, are needed now to save children’s lives.”

With food insecurity on the rise, the country also faces a growing public health emergency. Health services across the country are under immense pressure, with less than 50 per cent of health facilities in Port-au-Prince being fully operational, and two out of three of the major public hospitals being out of commission.

The impact on children is severe, with healthcare and life-saving treatment becoming increasingly inaccessible, putting children at greater risk of various forms of malnutrition and preventable disease.

Within this context, I just wanted to say a huge thank you again to all of you who’ve continued providing food assistance for the St Michel Orphanage – your dollars are literally saving lives, and all of it is being done in the name of Jesus through our beloved, trusted partners at the St Michel Church of Christ who we’ve enjoyed a long and loving partnership with since 2013.

Wanted to say a big “thank you” again to all of you who’ve continued helping out with our “housing fund” for the St Michel Orphanage – thanks to your assistance, we’ve been able to complete some much-needed repairs, including:

• Repainting the outside of the facility (photo above)
• Tiling some of the floor space that was just concrete
• Paving the driveway inside the orphanage compound

-As always – I’m extremely grateful for all your love, support, prayers, and encouragement of our efforts to minister in meaningful ways to our Christian brothers and sisters in Haiti.

GRUESOME IMPACT OF GANG VIOLENCE ON CHILDREN IN HAITI

I’m sure this is one of those things that most of us would much rather simply not know about – it’s far too disturbing and sickening to even begin to comprehend.

(But as Christians, is it really ok for us to just turn a blind eye to the vicious realities of what’s happening to children just a few hundred miles away from us?)

Yesterday, the Associated Press released an article that was then published in a number of major news outlets, including NBC News, ABC News, US News & World Report, and others.

I’ve included the article in full below – it’s an important reminder of the essential need for organizations (not just The Haiti Fund, but many others as well) who are diligently working to protect and provide for some of the most vulnerable children on our planet.

From the Associated Press…

Gruesome impact of gang violence on children in Haiti

An estimated 30% to 50% of gang members in Haiti are now children, according to UNICEF.

Haiti’s children are increasingly caught in the crossfire of gang violence, forced to carry weapons, spy on police and rival gangs and run errands for gunmen, according to a report released Wednesday by Amnesty International.

One of 51 children interviewed by the human rights group said he was constantly pressured by a gang to fight alongside it. “They killed people in front of me and asked me to burn their bodies. But I don’t have the heart for that,” the unidentified boy was quoted as saying.

An estimated 30% to 50% of gang members are now children, according to UNICEF. Amnesty International said the children “had no choice, and that their involvement was predominantly out of hunger or fear.”

Nearly two million people are on the verge of starvation in Haiti, and more than one million children are estimated to be living in gang-controlled areas, with 85% of the capital of Port-au-Prince under their rule.

One unidentified boy, 16, said he’s paid to run errands for a gang. “(The gangs) are in control. And there is nothing you can do about it,” he was quoted as saying.

If children refuse to follow a gang’s orders, they or their family would be killed, according to the report, which relied on a total of 112 interviews and research done from May to October last year.

Children are not only in danger of gangs, but of vigilantes and police officers who believe they’re working for them, according to Amnesty International.

Girls and young women also have been collectively r***d by gang members and infected with sexually transmitted diseases, often ending up pregnant in a country where health care is extremely limited.

One teen was r***d by six men, and her sister by five others. “There was so much blood,” the unidentified younger sister said in an interview.

Another teen recounted how she drank bleach to try and kill herself after having a baby after being r***d by three men who then left her naked in public. “People found me on the street and put a dress on me,” she said.

Amnesty International said many of those interviewed “scoffed at the idea of reporting their attacks to authorities.” A 16-year-old girl who was abducted and r***d by several gang members said: “Are you kidding me? It’s not possible…There is no police…The only chief in town are the gang members.”

The violence also has led to injury and death. One girl, 14, recounted how a ricocheting bullet pierced her lip in September 2024. Three months before that, her 17-year-old brother died from a stray bullet. “I lost a huge presence in my life. Since then, I don’t know how to be happy,” the girl said.

The violence is especially punishing on children with disabilities, with some recounting how they had to leave behind crutches and wheelchairs during sudden gang attacks in their neighborhoods.

Amnesty International called on the Haitian government to better support children, restore education, provide mental health services, and resume court proceedings against children suspected of ties to gangs who are being held without charge. It also said more resources including training and security are needed to help reintegrate children into society.

“The international community cannot continue to make empty promises,” the report said. “The country needs immediate and sustained technical and financial assistance to rescue a generation of boys and girls from being lost to repeated cycles of gang violence.”

In 2023, 128 children were reported killed, according to the U.N. While the figure wasn’t available for last year, more than 5,600 people were reported killed in 2024, the organization found.

Haiti’s National Police, which is severely underfunded and understaffed, is working alongside a U.N.-backed mission led by Kenyan police to help quell gang violence. However, the mission lacks funding and personnel, and the U.S. and other countries have been pushing to transform it into a U.N.-peacekeeping mission.

OUR ONGOING DISASTER RELIEF EFFORTS IN HAITI...

Believe it or not – and chances are you haven’t even heard about this on the news – but famine conditions in Haiti have become even MORE catastrophic in the past few months.

The latest data reveals that nearly half of all Haitians do not have enough to eat; 2 million of those are facing critical, emergency levels of hunger and acute food insecurity; and 6,000+ are now experiencing catastrophic levels of true famine conditions.

To make matters worse, northern Haiti – the Cap Haitien area in particular – was hit by torrential rains and catastrophic flooding just a couple weeks ago. Keep in mind - these are places where a number of us have visited, and many of us have friends and loved ones there.

Many of our Christian brothers and sisters in this region were completely underwater for days – cold and hungry, without even a dry place to sleep.

Working through See Him Ministries, our trusted ministry partner in the Cap Haitien area, The Haiti Fund was able to help supply many of the neediest families with a month’s worth of basic food staples - rice, beans, and oil (see photo).

Huge thanks to all of you who’ve continued contributing to our Disaster Relief Fund, and to our ongoing support of the St Michel Orphanage – without all your love, prayers, and financial assistance, none of this would be possible.
