Last night I gambled with my time and drove to Mt St Helens to chase thunderstorms, which is about 4 and a half hours away from me, that gamble turned into one of the best nights of my life 😍

As I was driving there, things were not looking good. The volcano had clouds covering it and the storm seemed to be splitting so I thought it was weakening. By the time I got within 30 minutes of my destination I started to see near constant lightning. I had to fight the urge to pull over right then to start photographing it and pushed my way to Mt St Helens. 🌩

This ended up being one of the best decisions of my life as when I got there the mountain had cleared of clouds and the lightning was going crazy!!! I stayed close to my car and hopped in any time I felt uneasy because it got pretty intense at times.

I set up my camera and started shooting, the moon began to peek out of the clouds providing me with some much needed detail in the majestic volcano. Even though it was raining and storming really hard, I was so excited as I knew what I was capturing was something truly special.

I come from Kansas where thunderstorms are frequent, but I had never photographed lightning since becoming a professional photographer. I have missed thunderstorms dearly since moving to Washington so last night was truly amazing and special to me. 😇
