Last week the Lydia Cobb-Quequechan Chapter held their Good Citizens Award Program. We had 9 high schools participate! Each of the school winners were given a $100 scholarship and the winner was presented with a $500 scholarship. Attendance was wonderful with friends, family, 2 prospectives and press attending and enjoying the snacks. What a wonderful way to spread the word about DAR! The following is excerpted from the February 11, 2026 article from The Somerset Sentinel written and photos by George Austin.
The DAR Good Citizen Awards are presented to students who demonstrate the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. They have to submit a resume and write an essay to apply for the award. Three judges, who are not affiliated with the Daughters of the American Revolution, review the applications. Students are nominated for the award by high school faculty and administrators. The award winners are also invited to the State House for a tour and to take a photo with the award winners from around Massachusetts.
Anne Chace, the regent of the Lydia Cobb-Quequechan Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and Susan Horvitz, the committee chair for the Good Citizen Awards, conducted the ceremony at the library.
Students who received the award at the Somerset Public Library today included O'Donovan, Izabel Znoj of Bristol County Agricultural High School, Riley Deveney of Bristol- Plymouth Regional Technical High School, Gianna Botelho of Joseph Case High School, Sophia Lourenco of Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School, Kylie Smith of Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School, Micah Ross of BMC Durfee High School, Athena Yang of Taunton High School and Nissa Inwood of Westport High School. Botelho was the Chapter winner and received an additional scholarship from the Lydia Cobb - Quequechan chapter and will go on to compete in the state competition.
The Lydia Cobb-Quequechan Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution promotes the objectives of the national organization which are historic preservation, education and patriotism.
