Doug was given bad news about a month ago when he checked himself into RI Hospital with severe Jaundice. After several tests they found a small Cancer Tumor blocking a passage between his pancreas and liver. They put a stent in to open the passage as a temporary fix. Then the roller coaster ride began. A surgeon told him he could take the tumor out. The oncologist said it wasn’t possible and he would need a liver transplant. The Doctors at Beth Israel said he didn’t have time to wait for a donor and that they could perform a surgery that was very complicated and they had done it successfully 5 or 6 times previous. Doug had a choice, 6-8 months of unknown quality of life with Chemo or do the surgery that could prolong his life for years but with great risk. He took the brave option and chose the surgery. The surgery lasted over 14 hrs. The surgeon said that there was so much damage to his bile duct that it took them 4 attempts to make a repair. At that point they saw that his liver was more compromised than anticipated. Over night his condition worsened with internal bleeding. They performed another surgery in the morning to try to stop it and stabilize him in order to complete the original task. Damian was his health proxy and spent all morning with his family by Doug’s bedside. Doug was never conscious again. Mike Dupont arrived at 1:25 and Doug passed calmly at 1:30.
We are sure going to miss Doug around the airport. He was thrilled to have seen the airport turned around and finally running for pilots. We will post here when services are going to be.
Hug the ones you care about. This reminds us how quickly and easily you will never hear someone’s voice again. Like Doug after being asked How are you? “Ive never had a bad day in my life”
Rest Peacefully my friend until we fly in formation one day!
