Hopeful news for storm-damaged beaches!

Pinellas County could soon get federal help again to protect its beaches after years of going it alone đź‘€

Leaders have reached a deal with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that could restore funding for future beach renourishment projects, something officials say is critical after storm damage and rising costs. What the agreement means moving forward ⬇️

Truly David versus Goliath:’ Pasco community fends off development plan
By John Cotey
May 24 2026, 12:00 am

In a unanimous and surprising vote after hours of emotional testimony, the St. Leo Town Commission blocked a proposed 620-home development on the Abbey golf course property, handing residents a rare victory against large-scale growth in Pasco County.

The 4-0 vote May 13, with one commissioner recusal, denied transmittal of a comprehensive plan amendment that would have cleared the first legal hurdle for Mohr’s Crossing, a proposed community of 440 single-family homes and 180 townhomes on the 289-acre golf property across County Road 52 from Saint Leo University.

The decision marked a major victory for Saint Leo University and local residents who said the project would permanently alter the town’s unique character.

Thought for the day. Everyone needs to do their part.

(Shared from Unseen Florida):

There is a bad drought currently throughout Florida. Water pump wells have been starting to go dry. Maybe residents throughout the area may not be aware of how precious the fresh water is in Florida. Florida is 'floating' on fresh water, surrounded by saltwater. Our ground is sand and limestone, its not that strong and sound. I think too many people just turn on the tap or sprinkler, or fill pools, have leaky faucets and such. People are wasting water, especially with no thought of the impact overuse of water during a drought. I believe that sinkholes will occur when we finally get our tropical rains back.

The ocean is saltwater, Florida is surrounded by it. Which parts of Florida will sink, which will become saltwater wells, how will the farmers and people afford new systems to get fresh water??

Please THINK before you overuse more fresh water. The news says 2 feet of rain is needed to get out of the drought. We will need some consistant good tropical rain storms to get out of this drought. Meanwhile take care to conserve your ground water.

A concerned Floridian.

It's almost time again for Creative Loafing Tampa Best of the Bay nominations! This year, only the top ten organizations with the most nominations will eligible for voting.

After saving 14 virgin acres of land in Tarpon Springs from development in 2025, we at WK Preservation Group were incredibly honored to win last year's Best Environmental Organization.

With more conservation projects (to be announced) on the horizon, we would like to keep our name and cause out there to garner as much community support as possible.

Nominations open up May 14.
