Cricket Broke her Hip and We are Building a Home for Her.
A short while back on a cold New Mexico morning, Eric drove to Cricket’s property to offer some assistance. As he arrived, he saw her walking across the sagebrush carrying two water containers. Concerned for her, he called out “What are you doing?” She replied that her neighbor was unable to get his water in the mornings and she delivers water to him.
This is the essence of Cricket, an 80 year old stalwart soul who gently helps others before she thinks of herself. She values the importance of hard work and positivity in her own life and in the life of her community.
Cricket arrived on the Mesa west of Taos when she was 36. As a young person, she worked and traveled with her mother, a seasonal worker. Her mother made sure that Cricket attended school and they traveled and worked together from Oregon to Florida.
Cricket describes joining this Mesa community as her saving grace. She discovered freedom and hard working, fun loving friends and neighbors. They taught her the importance of giving and receiving, and of offering a helping hand without enabling dependency.
Today though, at the age of 80, Cricket has injured her hip but not her spirit. She realizes that this year, she is less able and winter will come soon. She has accepted that she is the one who needs help!
A group of volunteers have banded together to build a tiny (10’ x 12’), accessible, warm house for Cricket. Due to the impending change of season, we must be timely in our work and fiscally responsible to complete Cricket’s tiny house before winter. We will need assistance with funding and with helping hands for the work.
With our labor and love and with your full participation, we will return Cricket to her Mesa home.
We’ll be on Cricket’s property in Tres Orejas Monday (TOMORROW) 9/14 to move materials we can upcycle out of the way so a cleaning service can use large machinery to clear the rest. Road improvements will be made so building materials can be delivered to the area we clean up and construction work can begin.
Volunteers are needed from 9:30 am until whenever! If you can’t make it out to clean or build, you can donate to Cricket’s GoFundMe and help spread the word!
