From Dune to Lord of The Rings to Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, new worlds have been used to tell us more clearly about this one. Join National Indigenous Futurism Award winner, game designer, novelist, Nebula Finalist, comic writer, poet, and Comanche Citizen Weyodi OldBear in a world building workshop.
We will look at classic 20th century world building examples in fiction in order to learn the necessary ingredients to design a world that feels real to readers, giving participants an opportunity to workshop possible worlds. Repeatable exercises will enable writers to tell their story more completely through unique and immersive world building that will linger in readers’ minds long after the tale is told.

Weyodi OldBear is a voting citizen of the Comanche Nation and an award-winning Indigenous Futurist author, poet, game developer and Nebula-finalist. Her novel “As Many Ships As Stars”, released in October of 2024 by Android Press, received shining reviews from Publishers Weekly. Her short story “Red Lessons” was the winner of the national Imagining Indigenous Futurism Prize. The first book in her trilogy series “The Root and The Seed” (based on the short story “Red Lessons”) released by Android Press in June 2026, received a glowing review from celebrated Indigenous Horror storyteller and editor Shane Hawk. Her comic credits include the “A Howl” anthology edited by Beth laPensee, the Lakota Legal Collective’s Guide for Water Protectors published by Stanford University Press, and upcoming comic series from Warpaint Studios, A Tribe Called Geek comics, and Green Archer Comics, including “The Clock” for which she was nominated for a Zelda award. Her proudest achievement in tabletop gaming is as a core writer for Nebula finalist Coyote & Crow.
