NEW Matching Monday! We are going to do a matching fundraiser the first Monday of every month, thanks to a couple of regular donors.

This month’s goal is $500 and the deadline is the 14th. That’s only $35/day, but we’ve already got $50, which makes it $32/day 🤗 Totally doable!

We will update via Stories & in comments as donations come in.

I know, I know, we just did a matching thing, but here’s the scoop…it’s literally never ending as far as what’s needed and we are constantly adjusting to meet our THU guests needs. For example, licking, sniffing, and chewing are calming activities for dogs, so we provide toys that promote those things. Those toys are pricey, as well as the things we put inside the toys. The mouser kitties (2-4 ferals like Red & resident Swish) are eating 10+ lbs of food a week and we have no mice 😳 Supplements like Tranquilium and pre/probiotics are daily things. We are also consistently fixing, upgrading, adding, or replacing fencing, covers, and kennels like the addition of the new kid’s horse panel roof ($240).

It’s also the beginning of the month when our rent is due and many of the donations we recently received were designated for vet costs so that’s what we will use those funds for. Our average monthly costs without any new guests range from $900-$1200. Add in a guest like Jack (whose name is actually Mickey 😊) and that typically adds a minimum of $600 to our monthly. And if we go out on trapping assignments, that’s another $300 minimum each. It all adds up so we are in constant need 🤷‍♀️

Guess what? Looks like Jack has an owner! We are waiting for confirmation before sharing his actual name, but yeah, he’s very loved and his dad wants the very best for him.

We will continue to care for this boy through his neuter & healing and will be working on supporting his dad so his beloved dog is hopefully contained on his property and not able to wander. Jack will have a nice neutercation (neuter with a staycation) full of play and love and when it’s time for him to go back home, he’ll be set up for a safer life ♥️

What’s he’s received so far:
•Clear heartworm & tick borne disease test
•DHPP + Rabies vaccines
•Parasite control
•Lots of enrichment toys
•Fresh clean water & regular meals
•Safe & peaceful place to chill
•Reflective collar + ID & Rabies tags

This is what our true mission is! Temporary housing for dogs who have a future plan (whether with a current guardian or going to a new home) and who may need a nice place with kind people to help heal after spay/neuter, vetting, or trauma.

We can’t do this without support from the community & other organizations like and at some point down the line with a change of leadership, the 🤩 Collaboration is absolutely key in continuing to raise the bar for animal & human welfare and it’s happening with or without the County. Wouldn’t it be dreamy if we could ALL work in collaboration? ☁️

When we care for the whole household, pet’s lives greatly improve! This sweet boy is a perfect example of what’s possible when the whole household is supported and everyone has the opportunity to thrive ♥️🐕♥️

Taking a deep breath…

I’m so so sad to share that the sweet pup who was hit by a car yesterday, we called him “Pancho”, had way more history of injuries than any of us knew. After a thorough exam at Alpine Vet Monte Vista, we learned he had likely been hit by multiple cars in the past causing chronic pain, as well as healing wounds from weeks ago and yesterday’s hit to his right rear leaving a hole in his knee and a likely amputation. All of that info combined with an estimated age of 10+ yrs made the decision making process difficult, but then we found out he was years younger, like maybe 3-4 yrs! His body was trashed, making him appear to be a senior. His actual age actually took my breath away in sadness. 🥺

Unfortunately, we just couldn’t imagine asking him to continue with such a wrecked physical body and how exhausted he was from struggling day after day for likely his entire life. This poor dog had been suffering for a long time and we just couldn’t let it continue so decided to give him the gift of euthanasia. That was really the only way to be sure he would not have to go through anymore really hard days & nights.

This was hard on everyone who helped him yesterday and I know it’s hard for all who spent time with him wondering how to help him beyond food and soft pets as he wandered around Cid's Food Market and Centinel Bank Northside with a completely broken animal welfare system in Taos County. Of course, we are disappointed and angry with the human(s) who originally left him to fend for himself from the jump vs offering him safety and comfort.

But furthermore, the current leadership of Taos County has failed and continues to fail dogs just like Pancho and the community members who so desperately desire better than animals being discarded. All dogs and humans deserve better and Taos County needs a change! This dog did not have to have a hard life and Taos County needs to do much better 😞

Pancho’s BFF, Jack (pictured w/ Pancho’s hoodie), is in our care and willStray Hearts Animal Shelterr adoption through once he’s ready. So grateful for a collaborative relationship with our local shelter so that Jack has a great life going forward ♥️

Hey all, there’s an update coming as soon as I have a second d to be settled. I got home at 3:30am and have this boy, we named him Jack, at Salazar. He’s doing great, just initial vetting.

We are good on funds thanks to you all. You really really supported us in a big way and we truly could not be more grateful.

Gotta get Jack inside.

Thanks again,
Jen

Are these your dogs who hang at a lot?

Desperately trying to find someone who will claim ownership to make medical decisions for the older one (1st two pics). The younger one would be lost without his buddy so he’s with us (see last two pics). The older one was hit by a car earlier today and the good people at called everyone they could for help and I happened to be right there. We are heading to Alpine Vet. He’s got multiple large open wounds, road rash on his head, and possible broken leg and in a lot of pain.

We don’t want to have to make decisions for someone else for their dog without making a big effort to find their people. If you know who they belong to or they are yours, please call us at 575-613-3066 immediately.

I put collars on them, they are not chipped and they’ve wandered for months and months.

Because we have all our vet funds at Salazar Vet and nowhere near enough to pay for this vet visit, we need our community’s help.

Donations greatly appreciated! It’ll be a minimum of $400, could be closer to $600. We really want to get his pain under control asap.

Are you missing this older gentleman? Call us 575-613-3066 or 575-758-2981 immediately if he’s yours!

ETA: OWNER LOCATED, REUNITED 🤗

He was hanging at Taos Chicharron Burritos, thanks so much for posting him, Marisol Real♥️

No collar/I.D., he’s chipped and we are working on getting owner info., but it’s taking quite awhile. I’d really like to get him back home right away. I’m sure he’d rather be home than stuck in a crate with my boring butt.

PSA: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE put a collar with I.D. on your dogs. We have all these dogs out here running around and what we hear “He’s never done that before!” Every. Single. Time. Whether talking about jumping out of a window, leaving an unfenced yard, walking out the door, crossing the highway, jumping out of the truck bed, etc etc.

Dogs out nevering like they’ve nevered before without a way to contact their owners just frustrates and inconveniences the finder and causes extra stress for these dogs. Help finders help YOUR dog get back home quickly.

This dog got lucky I was so close by and had time to gather him up. It isn’t usually this simple and every dog guardian can make it so it is always this simple by getting an I.D. On every dog!

I.D. tags can be purchased M-F at (contact them for hours) or most weekends from us at for FREE (donations welcome, but not necessary). We will be at Taos Java this weekend.
