As part of our Meditation Leader Training Program, students complete a service project to give back to their communities. MLTP student Steven joined others at Sunset Memorial Park in Albuquerque to place flags on veterans’ graves over Memorial Day weekend.

It was humbling, emotional, and a beautiful reminder of what Memorial Day truly means. Steven even found the grave of a classmate — it was a tender, unexpected moment of connection.

In September, Steven also helped with Scatter Day, supporting families as they laid their loved ones’ ashes to rest in the rose garden. It was moving to hear their stories and witness so much love and remembrance in one place.

And with his spiritual community, he has been helping prepare a new May Pole — from choosing and carving the tree to honoring it with song, ritual, and gratitude. The work continues as they prepare for spring’s renewal.

MEDITATION TIP

Aim to practice first thing in the morning. You can also try “habit stacking” your practice by doing it immediately before or after one of the things you normally do in your morning routine, such as brushing your teeth. This will help ensure your practice has a space in your daily schedule, limiting the risk of forgetting to practice or running out of time as the day becomes more hectic. Plus, it can help you start your day with a present, grounded mind.

Celebrate the Spring Equinox in Sean's Zoom writing retreat "Writing from the Heart: Seeds of Renewal," 2 short writing sessions over 2 days, March 20-21, for a total of 6 hours. Led by Sean Tetsudo Murphy Sensei and Tania Casselle (both award-winning writers) the retreat is all live on Zoom with a small group (not prerecorded!) with a sliding scale fee and low income spaces. Info and registration here: https://taniacasselle.com/writing-seminars-coaching-manuscript-editing/writers-online-writing-retreat/
In this Spring Equinox retreat we’ll nurture our inner balance and welcome the season’s renewal, opening our imagination to fresh ideas and the blossoming of our creative potential. Spring feels pregnant with possibility, as the earth lives itself into its new clothes, and as we humans also live ourselves into our new skins, our new selves. Let's explore what is possible within us!
Mindfulness and other contemplative practices will center and ground us, helping us drop below the surface of our busy lives to connect with the deeper river that flows and sustains us.
In the writing, we'll explore ways to free our natural flow of expression, bypass our inner critic, express our authentic voice and access our true source of creativity.

As part of our Meditation Leader Training Program, students complete a service project to give back to their communities. MLTP graduate Richard volunteered with a local group dedicated to preserving and restoring Te Tātua a Riukiuta (known locally as Big King), a volcanic cone and sacred Māori site in New Zealand.

Once part of a larger volcanic caldera, much of this land was quarried away and urbanized over the past 150 years. Our work aims to help restore the mauri — the life force — of this land through hands-on environmental restoration. His projects included weeding to protect young native Pūriri trees, which are vital to local birdlife, as well as predator control to help reduce invasive rats and possums that threaten native species.

Balancing the precept of “no killing” with “affirming life” has been a powerful koan for Richard. This work reminds him that restoration, like the Bodhisattva path, is never truly finished. We act as we must, with care and responsibility.
